Banjo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The banjo can be played in several styles and is used in various forms of music.
The two most common modern day acoustic banjos are the resonator banjo which has a detachable chamber, or resonator, on the back of the rim and the open back banjo which does not have a resonator.
American Old-time music typically uses the five-string open back banjo.

Dr. Horsehair - The Banjo, Our American Heritage - banjo history
The feeling was that the banjo was a "feeble instrument", not able to be used in all keys and capable of only one, or at the most, two scales of music.
During the first minstrel shows with Dan Emmett on fiddle and Billy Whitlock on banjo, as well as the shows put on by Joel Sweeney and his brother Sam, the audiences of minstrel music were introduced to the sound of the fiddle and the banjo together as a complimentary duo.
As a result of the finger-picking guitar style of playing, the banjo in the cities and outside the Appalachian Mountain region started moving away from the "crass" minstrel music to the more sophisticated classical style of music.

 Banjo in Traditional Music
One of the characteristics of swing music was that the banjo was dropped in favour of the guitar.
Other banjo players to record in the 1920s were Michael Gaffney from New York and the late Neil Nolan from Maine, who played with Dan Sullivan's Shamrock Band in Boston.
So the evidence, though it is circumstantial, would indicate that originally the banjo was used in Ireland for rudimentary accompaniment of songs and tunes, with perhaps some of the simpler melodies being plucked out by the fingers.

 History of Classic Banjo
Banjo ensembles, ranging from duos and trios to large orchestras containing a variety of banjo hybrids mixed with mandolins and guitars, sprang up everywhere, especially on college campuses.
The most outspoken leader of this musical movement was Samuel Swain Stewart (1855-1898), an instrument maker and music publisher from Philadelphia.
Dance bands had become popular, and the five-string banjo could not supply the rhythm or volume needed for this style of music.
