 BBC - h2g2 - ZTT Records 1983-1988
During their first few years ZTT achieved an unprecedented amount of success for a fledgling record company, largely because of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, although the successes of the other two artists should not be ignored (three UK top-30 singles and two UK top-30 LPs).
Most apparent was the artistic approach to record sleeves and band propaganda - the lack of band pictures on record covers, the enigmatic sleeve notes written by Morley, the 'Frankie Say...' T-shirts, etc. But also there were seemingly endless remixes of ZTT singles.
ZTT were pioneers not only of the 12" remix but also of another new format: the cassette single.

Stiff Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Stiff Records record label was created in London in 1976, at the outset of the punk boom by entrepreneurs Dave Robinson and Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera).
Both were well-known London music biz characters, Robinson having briefly worked for Jimi Hendrix in the late 1960s and also managed pub rock combo Brinsley Schwarz in the early 1970s, and Jakeman having been an early manager for another pub-rock band, Dr.
Robinson and Riviera were a fiery management combination, and after a series of disagreements, Riviera left Stiff in early 1978 to form the short-lived Radar Records, taking Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe with him as a settlement package.

Welcome to the Pleasuredome is the title of the third single from Frankie Goes to Hollywood (details below), and also the title of their first album released on ZTT Records in 1985.

 FROM ABC TO ZTT
You can listen to something that was recorded 30 years ago and sounds archaic, but if you like the song that's the most important thing.
If you listen to some of the records that I was making in 1979 and 1980 with The Buggles or with Dollar, I was trying to make records sound like records sound today, before all of the technology existed.
This record might take a year to make, and I don't want to have anything on it that's going to be out of date in six months.' I can still listen to Propaganda, Frankie and the ZTT back-catalogue, and hardly any of it sounds particularly dated to me."

Trevor Horn Worship Hall - ZTT - The Label of Trevor Horn
This collector-annoying practice of record releases and distribution stays typical for ZTT until this day: From one year to another the same cd or record may be re-released with different versions of some songs, as it has happened, f.e.
During 1984 the Morley-created ZTT hype reached its climax: the covers of ZTT records were crowded with secret messages and symbols (bombs, hearts, crosses, sperm-cells...).
In November 1983 "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood became the first ZTT record, followed by "Into Battle" from the Art Of Noise, ZTT's in-house band.

 Middle East Open Encyclopedia: Madchester
This didn't chart, but was well received and the band were looking like they were on the brink of being the biggest thing in the country by the time they release their eponymous debut album (produced by John Leckie) in April.
However, sales of their two later albums for Sire Records, Stutter in 1986 and Strip Mine in 1988, were disappointing and, at the time Madchester hit, the band was using t-shirt sales to fund its own releases through Rough Trade Records.
They were signed to Factory Records, supposedly after Haçienda DJ Mike Pickering saw them at a Battle of the Bands contest in which they came last.

BBC - collective - ZTT Records and me.
ZTT's music was all about the manipulation of the sounds in a studio environment, the masterful orchestral overdubs by Ann Dudley, the subtle instrumentation, the search for sonic perfection.
The sheer excess of packaging, the overtly shocking videos, the laddish gang mentality of the band, the provocative quotations, Paul Morley's masterful wordplay on the sleeves, and of course the extreme dynamic pop sounds generated from within Sarm Studios (ZTT HQ) meant that the band were destined for every front cover and chart.
Unfortunately the band, couldn't sustain the flow after releasing a couple of fine singles (Duel, p-Machinary) and one excellent debut ‘A Secret Wish’, they seemed to fall apart at the seams, but give me a classic one off over a lifetime of mediocrity any day.

He went on to run ZTT Records, produce such quintessentially 80s bands as Frankie Goes to Hollywood and ABC, and become a torch bearer for the kind of technology-led pop that has always tormented the ears of the hip.
His most important tool was the Fairlight, which was the first sampler: costing £18,000, it took around eight seconds of an existing recording and allowed it to be digitally manipulated for a new recording.
But the most influential record was The Man Machine by Kraftwerk.

Paul Morley, founder of ZTT Records (the record label of Frankie Goes to Hollywood), and more recently something of a media pundit, also began his journalistic career writing for the NME during the early 1980s.
This resulted in the recruitment of Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill, who went on to champion a new musical trend that became known as punk rock, giving coverage to rising bands such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, and clubs such as The Roxy in London's Neale Street.
Other notable individuals that wrote for the paper during this period included 'X Moore' (a socialist writer and also member of the band The Redskins), Steven Wells (who was formerly a ranting poet under the name Seething Wells), Adrian Thrills and Ian Penman.
