 Wind Instruments: Some Basics
Occasionally brass instruments are not made of metal at all; for example, the sousaphone, a tuba used in marching bands, is often made of (lighter-weight) fiberglass.
The properties of this standing sound wave inside the instrument are what give the sound its pitch, its dynamic level (loudness or softness), its harmonics, and its timbre (color).
This can cause a bubbling sound in the tone.

Harris expands wind-instrument program with new ensemble - MIT News Office
I felt the term "wind symphony" more accurately reflects the "symphonic" nature of the ensemble due to its size and its repertoire: original music composed for a large body of wind and percussion instruments and/or choirs of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
Harris: The Wind Symphony is the largest ensemble -- 74 members who all play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments.
I don't think musicians should be limited in experiencing the freedom of improvisation because they may not play a "jazz" instrument, so to speak.

Wind instrument - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Hornbostel-Sachs scheme of musical instrument classification, wind instruments are classed as aerophones.
A wind instrument is a musical instrument that contains some type of resonator (usually a tube), in which a column of air is set into vibration by the player blowing into (or over) a mouthpiece set at the end of the resonator.
For example, the saxophone is typically made of brass but is classified as a woodwind instrument due to the fact that it has a reed.
