Wilco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hailed by critics, A Ghost is Born was Wilco's first album to make the top ten of the US album charts in 2004, opening at #8, and also reached the top 50 of the Australian charts.
Ironically, the band ended up at Nonesuch Records, another Time Warner subsidiary, and the album was released in the spring of 2002.
Wilco agreed, and in addition to recording with Bragg in Ireland, they were given their own share of songs to finish.

Wilco's most accessible release, it was critically heralded for Tweedy's artful, sometimes playful, lyrics and its tight, guitar-based music.
Wilco's involvement in the two fascinating "Mermaid Avenue" albums, in which Wilco created music for some of Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, sung by British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, added to Wilco's luster and acclaim.

That is, Wilco are in a position to control their music, and fans can be more-informed listeners.
Wilco releases had sold between 112,000-200,000 domestically, 500,000 worldwide, and the band consistently plays to audiences of 2,000 in major markets.
While the music could be heard as light pop, it was juxtaposed with a complex and lyrical darkness, creating a relentless tension.

 Wilco - PopMatters Concert Review
Viewed this way, Wilco may be the closest thing to a vintage album rock band today, where, at least in theory, every song is equally deserving of exposure.
At least he didn't during Wilco's performance at Towson's Recher Theatre, not even as the band opened their set with 45 minutes of music from Mermaid Avenue, the two-volume collection of unfinished Woody Guthrie songs that Tweedy and co-collaborator Billy Bragg put to music.
The same could be said about R.E.M. in the mid-eighties, another band who, like Wilco, created music steeped in regional ruralism, and whose fans ingested their albums whole cloth, rather than single by single.

Despite being one of the weaker albums Wilco has released, A Ghost is Born is nonetheless the most fascinating.

Enlisting Wilco as further collaborators, 15 lyrics were molded into an improbably fine album, as they manage to infuse the legendary folk singer’s lyrics with a hearty rock n’ roll spirit.
Rather than redo an album that they were very satisfied with, the band got out of their recording contract, streamed the album on the Internet, and became part of an intense bidding war due to the "story" the album had become and the rave reviews posted on Internet message boards.
Note: Egan's short stay in Wilco ended with this album, though in an improbable turn of events he ended up in Bragg's touring band.

Wilco: A Ghost Is Born: Pitchfork Review
But it pains me to see Wilco celebrate this album by getting right back on the tour bus, outfitted with a new guitar-army lineup, and spending yet more time away from the city from whence they derive their power.
Remaining within the safe confines of their more traditional influences, the piano-strut of "Theologians" echoes the white-soul of The Band (Wilco's closest ancestral analogue), while the slapdash "I'm a Wheel" is an encore-ready reminder of the group's early, 'Mats-evoking days.
There are only two songs on A Ghost Is Born that supercede Wilco's influences and arrangement struggles, moments when studio texture and songwriting merge smoothly to represent the album's grey mood in a way that's genuinely moving rather than disappointingly motionless.

What's So Great About Wilco? - How a spineless rock band became known for its nerve. By Stephen Metcalf
Early in Wilco's existence, the role of sound-shaping mentor was played by the record company, which wanted a breakout song to propel sales.
The story of Wilco's evolution—from competent pop-rock band to anticommercial rallying cry—goes like this: In 2001, Wilco produced an album its record label found far too eccentric to promote.
In Wilco, he agonizes in turn over his singing, his guitar playing, and his songwriting, each of which he finds clumsy and inchoate.

But the fact that Wilco can get words like these stuck into listener's heads just goes to show the quality of their songwriting.
Previously, all of their songs bore the mark "All words and music by Jeff Tweedy;" this album's liner notes credited "All tracks written, produced and performed by Wilco." This seems like a gigantic step forward for the band, especially in light of what the future held for them.
The title track "Summer teeth", with its new age running water sound effects, is a disappointment and leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth before the closing song "In a future age" saves the tail end of the record from destroying the album.

Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: Pitchfork Review
Complex and dangerously catchy, lyrically sophisticated and provocative, noisy and somehow serene, Wilco's aging new album is simply a masterpiece; it is equally magnificent in headphones, cars and parties.
On Summerteeth, Tweedy yowled about "speakers speaking in code" and I thought of that refrain from "I Can't Stand It" when I first heard the words "yankee-hotel-foxtrot" uttered by the disembodied English woman on the sublimely creepy box-set of shortwave radio transmissions, The Conet Project, which is sampled sporadically throughout this record.
And in a deeper, more deliberate world, perhaps we could trace that thread to unravel the secret wonder of Wilco's new album.

In 1995, Wilco issued their debut album, A.M., a collection of spry country-rock tunes.
In 2004, Wilco released A Ghost Is Born which was hailed as a 'Great American Album.' If it can be said to have any unifying theme, it would be the casual descent of beauty into chaos.

Amazon.com: A Ghost Is Born: Music: Wilco
Frontman Jeff Tweedy's songwriting continues to evolve: "Hummingbird" is a dreamy Randy Newman-styled love song; "The Late Greats" is a sly ode to the world of pop tacked onto the end of the album (as if using such a fun song on this understated disc was an afterthought).
That album's Jesus, Etc. marked Wilco as experts in the non-sappy use of strings, and this album's Hummingbird takes them even further in that direction, incorporating heavy doses of guitars, violins, and piano for a chamber-pop sound that never spills over into Belle and Sebastian-style wussiness.
The sound on this album is likened to Neil Young and Crazy Horse in the guitar sound and stylings.

Splendid Magazine reviews Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
This time around, Wilco are a different band entirely; gone are the sashaying tempos and Rickebacker-toting riffs of A.M., the barrelchested barroom brawn of Being There and the pop-for-pop's-sake sentimentality of Summerteeth.
Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the band was allowed to buy their record back from the folks who, by the looks of it anyway, seemed more than willing to forsake the band's artistic integrity to fuel their own financial gain.
You'd think that the (initial) pre-release hype surrounding the record would have changed their tunes -- but alas, poor judgement won out, and Wilco suddenly found themselves pitted against a headstrong major-label that not only refused to release their record (not in its intended form, anyway), but retained its ownership rights to boot.

A Ghost Is Born hardly sounds like a retread of YHF, but the languid, ghostly song structures, the periodic forays into dissonance, and the pained, hesitant vocals from Jeff Tweedy that were so much a part of that album also take center stage here.
A Ghost Is Born confirms what old fans and recent converts already know -- that Wilco is one of America's most interesting and imaginative bands -- and it's brave and compelling listening.
