indya.com Music - Album Review of Pop Hits
Although the term "pop" is an abbreviation for "popular" music, "pop" has usually been treated as a musical genre and, in turn, is the most significant segment of music in terms of share size through the years and will probably remain so.
Hence, music of most one-hit wonders of the world is "pop".
The basis of any pop record - whether it borrows its influences from rock, alternative, dance, rap, hip-hop or any other form of music - is accessibility with the clear intent that the sound reaches the widest possible listeners.

WHAM! : MusicWeb Encyclopaedia of Popular Music
UK pop vocal duo: George Michael (b Yorgos Kyriatou Panayiotou, 26 Jun. '63, Finchley, N. London) and Andrew Ridgeley (b 26 Jan. '63, Bushey, Herts) Ridgeley also played guitar; Michael was the mastermind and songwriter; they became the acceptable face of conservative '80s UK pop: slick, debonair and massively successful.
Michael's solo 'Careless Whisper' was USA/UK no. 1 and he was lead voice on the Band Aid single '84; in '85 he received the first of two Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year awards and duetted with Elton John at Live Aid.
They were the first Western pop group to perform in China, leading to contentious video Under Foreign Skies.

George Michael - Current Biography Yearbook 1988
In addition, that year saw the release of their third and final album, Music From The Edge of Heaven, which included the hit singles "I'm Your Man" and "The Edge of Heaven." Michael wrote and produced most of the songs on the album and also played most of the instruments.
At the age of eleven, he began "listening intently" to the music of Elton John and the group known as Queen.
The scowls and leather jackets that had graced the cover of their first album were replaced by smiles, shorts, and suntans.

In 1982 the duo won a contract with Innervision Records and, in the summer of 1982, released the album Fantastic, which became a hit in Britain.
In sharp contrast to Wham!'s "bubblegum pop" sound, Michael's first solo album, the Motown-inspired Faith (1987), featured songs with a much more soulful sound.
I used to dissect his records and obsess about song after song and it was the beginning of my love affair with pop."

CANOE -- JAM! Music - Pop Encyclopedia - Ian And Sylvia
The public reaction was scornful but high profile live events like the Atlanta Pop Festival and Festival Express 1970 received better response and so they were inspired to release an album.
Moving to MGM Records in 1967 they put out 'The Lovin' Sound' before being informed by Vanguard that they owed that label one more album.
As a means to explore this and other musical genres, the duo formed a free-form country-jazz instrumental experiment called The Great Speckled Bird which featured some of the hottest session players in the business - David Wilcox (guitar); Ben Keith (steel guitar), Jeff Gutcheon (piano), Jim Colegrove (bass) and N.D. Smart (drums).

By the time Wham entered the studio to record its third album, Music From The Edge Of Heaven, Micheal essentially was Wham: not only did he write and produce the songs, he also played nearly all the instruments.
From a young age, Micheal evidenced a love of American pop and RandB, although by the time he reached his teens he was also drawn to dance music, ska and glam.
A label dispute over royalties ensued, however, and in 1984, Wham, left Innervision to sign with Sony’s Epic Records.

The duo allowed their royalties for that song to top up the millions raised by Band Aid, and the video of the love-triangle ski-ing holiday is shown plentifully every Christmas.
WORLD DOMINATING duo for all of the mid-decade who broke millions of hearts by shrewdly deciding to split at a peak in '86.
Michael, bare-chested and wearing cut off jeans and pumps, stood at the front while Ridgeley was sandwiched by the two ladies as they performed the trumpety, semi-rap piece of pop wonderment with some hilarious handclap/bent double/finger pointing choreography.

Helping considerably, of course, was the singer's noticeable growth as both singer and songwriter since his earliest days in the pop duo Wham!--which began as a nondescript pop/dance group and quickly metamorphosed into a huge international hit machine.
Enough of a buzz was felt in American clubs to send the duo's 1983 debut album Fantastic into the top 100, despite the comparative mainstream failure of their earlier singles.
A final album hodgepodge of new and old singles, Music From The Edge Of Heaven, commemorated the duo's demise and made the top 10 that summer.

The Rise and Fall of Popular Music by Donald Clarke: Chapter 18 The Heat Death of Pop Music
Yet in general the new pop songs of the 1960s would not stand on their own, for the Beatles had accomplished something else.
The songs were forgettable, but by now the pop charts were ignored by serious music fans anyway.
When he visited New Orleans, we got a pop video featuring a skinny young woman who had nothing to do with New Orleans and whose raucous female Mick Jagger imitation was filmed close-up with a fish-eye lens so that she appeared to fellate a bulbous microphone, itself unnecessary with today’s technology.

By the end of the year he had released his solo album Faith and dominance of the Pop music world was soon complete.
He was frequently dismissed as a frivolous Pop musician.

But with regulations beginning to relax, China is increasingly attracting some of pop music’s biggest names, keen to tap into a burgeoning music market.
With bootlegging still rife in the country, legitimate record sales continue to be slow, but Chinese audience are no doubt enjoying the rare chance to glimpse Western pop idols for the very first time.
Still, with the Beijing Olympics only 4 years away, and with China keen to grasp the opportunity to showcase itself to the Western world, it would be no surprise to see a further influx of Western pop artists welcomed to China in the next few years.

The duo began recording funky dance manic but their biggest successes came when their music mellowed.
Some of that music is not very different in style from the ballads that he recorded with Wham.
After that, most of their hits were ballads beginning with Careless whisper, which was credited as a George Michael solo although Andrew Ridgeley co-wrote the song.

This is a band who, in the album credits, refers to drums as "boomkadittles" and bass and guitar as "thunderstick" and "lightenin' stick" respectively.
It’s not just that the guitar-driven power pop melodies are spare and infectious, nor that the emo-laden lyrics are repeated with mantra-like efficiency — it’s that the combination feels like a head-bobbing security blanket that we can wrap ourselves around all summer long.
The Insomniacs are another mod-influenced power pop trio who I turn to when I miss one of my favorite all-time bands, the early '90s British mod-influenced power pop trio Five Thirty.

Combining light soul music with slow, romantic ballads, they first hit the U.K. charts in the fall of 1982 with "Young Guns (Go for It)".

His greatest hits album has been top of the UK album charts for the past month.
The most surprising aspect about this collection, aside from its sheer weight, is that despite George's lengthy reign atop the charts, there are still the occasional surprises, the songs that will be familiar to none but the hardcore collector.
The British star, who vowed four year ago never to produce records again for Sony Music, is working on three new tracks for the company, all of which are potential hit singles.

Pop star George Michael has been uttering some careless whispers about producing a new stage musical about Wham!, the blown-dry British music duo he headed in the '80s.
