Swing (dance) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is danced to country and western music.
West Coast Swing is often danced with blues and rock and roll music, as well as to smooth and cool jazz.
Swing music had a revival in the late 1990s thanks to musician Brian Setzer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the movie Swing Kids (movie), and a number of other bands.

Western swing was the most eclectic form of country music and in its free-wheeling diversity, it set the stage for rock & roll.
Based in tradtional string band music, western swing also incorporated traditional pop melodies, jazz improvisation, blues and folk, creating a wildly entertaining and eclectic form of American music.

 WESTERN SWING
The sub-genre of country music called Western Swing is where jazz, blues and mountain music met in the 1920s.
Nowadays, Western Swing and its cousin Bluegrass are very much cult music and have no impact on modern country trends.
As with most forms of country music, it was Jimmie Rodgers who initialised the basic ideas of what would be called Western Swing.

Western Swing Music Guide (Page1) - Slipcue E-Zine
Western Swing is one of America's great original artforms, a mix of hillbilly stringband music and uptempo jazz.
Good-timin' western swing and the local spirit of independent Texas music are alive and well, as heard in this fun album by fiddler and songwriter Bob Rohan.
While honkytonk country took its cues from traditional folk ballads and a hefty dose of the blues, western swing was a more self-conscious mix of squaredancin' barn-dance music and big city jazz...

Swing History origins of Swing Dance
Country-Western Swing: a style of Jitterbug popularized during the 1980's and danced to Country and Western music.
The history of swing dates back to the 1920's, where the black community, while dancing to contemporary Jazz music, discovered the Charleston and the Lindy Hop.
With the discovery of the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug, the communities began dancing to the contemporary Jazz and Swing music as it was evolving at the time, with Benny Goodman leading the action.

 Western swing's the thing - Saturday, 02/01/03
Like bluegrass, western swing places as much emphasis on instrumental prowess as on the song, so it's music that Nashville musicians have played informally more than Music Row artists have recorded it.
The music blended big-band swing with Dixieland jazz and blues for a sound that was refined and down-home at the same time.
Now there's interest that parallels the surge in bluegrass and old-time country and the Jumpers won a major national western swing band award that's sparked them to think beyond their two albums to an all-originals album.

If you have never listened to western swing music before this album is great place to start, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Tulsa World's Spot Music Awards have listed their album as one of the best local albums of the year.
John T. Wills is the son of the late western swing song writer and band leader, Johnnie Lee Wills.

Most of this is NOT western swing - most of it is early Western music or pop songs done Western style.
After discovering the red hot band Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, I was looking forward to listening to more Western swing music.
With his Musical Brownies, Milton Brown was one of the first musicians to combine jazz, blues, & country music to come up with the exciting musical hybrid that was western swing.

There they listened to the "race" and "blues" music, and copied the lyrics to fit their own music to them.

 WESTERM SWING - A HISTORY
Two of his Globe releases, "Whoa Sailor" and "Swing Wide Your Gate of Love" - both of which were his original tunes, brought him to the attention of Tex Ritter and Hank and the Band were signed by Capitol Records.
The folks who came to the roadhouses were of course, all the 'locals', - everyone knew everyone else, and their ages ran from the young folks to the old-timers, friends and neighbors, husbands and wives, all could spend some time listening, drinking and dancing the weekend nights away.
In the 1960's, the acoustic folk music movement and 'Rockabilly' groups such as 'The Stray Cats' kept Western Swing alive.

Beats Walkin' Western Swing Band - Reviews!
Steel guitar, fiddle and snappy electric guitar are essential to the sound, along with singers who can bend notes jazz-style while singing a two-step.
A New Zealand native, Gilmour is a testament to the seductive powers of classic Western swing recordings.
But if there are any others, the group is ready for a battle of the bands to own the title fair and square.

I've seen it to music for which I'd prefer cha-cha, hustle, WCS, ECS, and even once merengue.

Roughstock's History of Country Music - Western Swing
It was a Saturday night dance type of music which combined the style of jazz and big band swing with the culture of the Southwest.
He perfected this style in the late 1930's with his band the "Texas Playboys." Many of his greatest hits were recorded between 1936 and 1943.
Musically, it contributed the drums and Hawaiian Steel Guitar to Country Music.

Secret Jazz: The Swinging Side of Western Swing
Lest you think that all Western Swing simply borrowed stylistic elements of New Orleans and Big Band Swing, Hank Penny and his Radio Cowboys listened attentively to Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
The hard swinging instrumental improvisations on piano and steel guitar and the simply crazed, Cab Calloway-like scat vocals on the up tempo jazzy numbers like “Some of these Days” and “Washington & Lee Swing” are timeless gems of 30s jazz.
Strange to tell, I heard an album of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, the best known Western Swing band of all time, the same year I first heard a Coltrane album.

Handbook of Texas Online: MILTON BROWN AND HIS MUSICAL BROWNIES
Milton Brown and His Musical Brownies was a western swing band that played together between 1932 and 1936.
Brown and his musicians were among the earliest pioneers of what was later called western swing, a mixture of country, blues, jazz, pop, and other musical forms.
In the formative years of the music, Dunn strongly influenced men like Leon McAuliffe and other steel guitarists.

Amazon.com: Music: Swing West! Vol. 3: Western Swing
From the honky-tonks of Bakersfield, to the guitar pyrotechnics of Speedy West and Joe Maphis, to the vibrant swing scene of 1940s Los Angeles, California often led Nashville with new instrumentation, musical composites and lyrical ideas.
Spade Cooley, whose orchestra included harps (the stringed instrument, not the harmonica), ruled with such efforts as "Oklahoma Stomp," and Tex Williams & the Western Caravan's "Cowboy Opus No. 1" is every bit as pretentious as its title suggests.
With trained, meticulous pop and jazz musicians as their sidemen, postwar California bandleaders created a more grandiose and metronomic brand of swing; they stuck more to arrangements and improvised less than their Texas-Oklahoma predecessors.

Red Meat - Honky Tonk Music
on the strong west coast tradition of creating authentic country and western music with a sharp edge, the San Francisco based band Red Meat is dedicated to keeping honky tonk music fresh and alive.
Professional and fun, "13" makes a very bold statement in favor of the tenets of traditional country and western music and underscores Red Meat's dedication to the music they love and make.
Still true to their original vision, Alvin's experience and expertise gave Red Meat the ability to take their music to the next level.

Western swing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It consists of an eclectic combination of country, cowboy, polka, and folk music, blended with a jazzy "swing", with a tip of the hat to New Orleans jazz and Delta blues, and played by a hot string band often augmented with drums, saxophones, pianos and, notably, the pedal steel guitar.
With the advent of radio broadcasting, it gained a much wider following and reached its "golden age" in the post-WWII era of the mid-forties — reflecting the waxing and waning of the more mainstream big-band sound.
Western swing, also known as Country Swing, is dance music with an up-tempo beat and a decidedly Southwestern US regional flavor.

Discography of Western Swing and Hot String Bands, 1928-1942 — Greenwood Publishing Group
The style developed from the Texas string band tradition, growing from a fiddle and guitar duo into full swing band groups, and along the way, it drew from and absorbed a variety of other musical styles, thus making it one of the most diverse genres in American music.
The result of years of research by its authors, this discography strives to identify and trace the recorded development of the musical style now known as western swing from its early years through World War II.
Until now, studies have been limited to a few book-length biographies, but through exhaustive research and interviews, Ginell and Coffey have provided the most complete and comprehensive listing of pre-War western swing and hot string band recordings to date.

Milton Brown & the Founding of Western Swing
The roots of western swing - that wonderful fusion of jazz, blues, and country - have long been associated with Bob Wills, the most famous performer of this hybrid country music tradition.
But in Milton Brown and the Founding of Western Swing, Cary Ginell reveals that the various elements which make up western swing first came together in a band formed by Brown in 1932, the Musical Brownies.
Over two decades later, a similar mixture of black and white musics would give rise to Elvis Presley and rockabilly.

MelBay.com: Western Swing Guitar Styles, by Joe Carr
While the song might be a simple one--playable with only two or three chords--the western swing guitarist changes chords every two beats, providing a driving and harmonically interesting background for the singers and instrumentalists.
If you have ever heard the sound of rhythm guitar in a good western swing band, you may have wondered how the guitarist achieved that unique chordal sound.
The chords and progressions explained in this book can be used in many types of music in addition to western swing and would serve as an excellent transition from open-string folk chords to more of a jazz approach.
