Violin Concerto (Berg) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There is another directly quoted tonal passage in the work in the form of a Carinthian folk song in the second movement.
In addition, the first four odd-numbered notes correspond to the open strings of the violin, from bottom to top, and it is exactly this gesture which opens the piece.
While parts of the score are atonal, as is the norm in twelve tone works, some parts can be said to be in a certain key, and quotes of purely tonal music are also present.

 Berg's Violin Concerto 1935
Alban Berg's Violin Concerto of 1935 is a prime example of this trend.
The tone-row-accompanied violin phrases contrast sharply with the complete consonance and traditional voice leading of the woodwind "organ." Later on in the piece (p.88 m.184-97) the flowing, chromatic melody is doubled an octave lower in the orchestra, recalling a device of melodic enhancement used extensively in the Romantic period.
The Violin Concerto is composed around a "tone row" - a characteristic set of intervals which covers each note of the 12-tone system.

Discovering Music: Listen to an analysis of Berg's Violin Concerto
Berg was a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg’s, yet applied a freer, more lyrical and expressive approach to atonal and twelve-note music.
He wrote orchestral works, including his violin concerto, songs, chamber and piano music, and 2 operas.

I have about a dozen recordings of this work, as it's my favorite violin concerto (sorry, Beethoven), but this reading is in a league of its own: the only comparable recording is the famous Krasner/Webern, which was only the second performance of the work ever.

That said, Sinopoli makes a great case for this piece to present to people like me. Following an approach similar to the one used in the Violin Concerto, in his hands the hard edges as softened, while the lyrical sections are presented in the beautiful velvet ‘cushion’ the members of the Staatskapelle Dresden provide.

 March 19 & 20
Berg had adored the girl since her earliest childhood, and, harnessing the creative energy that tragedy can inspire, he resolved to compose a musical memorial.
Berg's Violin Concerto cuts deep into the human psyche, and it stands near the summit of its genre.
Berg told his biographer Willi Reich that in the Andante-Allegretto movement he "had tried to translate the young girl's characteristics into musical characters." A nostalgic, dreamy quality pervades the first section, whose improvisational spirit belies its rigid musical organization.

Among his compositions under Schoenberg were five piano sonata drafts and various songs, including his ''Seven Early Songs (Berg)Seven Early Songs/'' (''Sieben frühe Lieder''), three of which were Berg's first publicly performed work in a concert featuring the music of Schoenberg's pupils in Vienna that same year.

Two of these performances--Alban Berg's Violin Concerto and the 1942 Piano Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg--never have been bettered, and this disc should have widespread appeal to collectors with an interest in the evolution of 20th Century music.
It seems entirely logical to offer these three seminal New Viennese School works together on a single disc, in this case running to some 77 minutes of music.

Nothing less than three masterpieces of the 20th century is the evening's menu, and their composers--Prokofiev, Berg and Sibelius--have earned honored places in the pantheon of creators whose music will continue to be heard as long as there are players to perform it and audiences to listen.

 Berg, Alban (1885 - 1935)
Berg's Violin Concerto and Chamber Concerto are an important part of 20th century repertoire.
Schoenberg's pupils Alban Berg and Anton Webern, each with an individual musical language, put into practice the general principles of atonality, music without tonality or key-centre, and twelve-note music or serialism, music based on a series of the twelve semitones or half-steps of the modern scale.
His Lyric Suite, for string quartet, was later orchestrated in part, while the delicately orchestrated Three Pieces of 1914-1915 form an occasional part of modern concert repertoire.

It seemed a perfect coda, delivered to a raptly quiet audience, following Tetzlaff’s equally rapt performance of the Berg that seemed generous in spirit on an afternoon that was perhaps over-generous with music in general.

Berg's Violin Concerto is considered by many to be the high point of the modern era.
Schoenberg's Piano Concerto of 1942 was described by the composer in a quattrain:

GM 2006 - Louis Krasner: 20TH CENTURY VIOLIN MASTERPIECES
The Violin Concerto was completed in 1935, very shortly before Berg’s death, and this live performance, dating from 1938, has a haunting, fragile beauty.
Louis Krasner was a rising young violin soloist when he commissioned Alban Berg to compose a concerto for him.
This powerful and romantic performance was recorded in concert in 1954.

 Cantata BWV 60 - Discussions - Part 1
Since 1935 (Berg's Violin Concerto was composed that year) is the year of Alban Berg's death, the connection to the words and music of the chorale can be more easily understood.
Alban Berg was a genius and this brilliant and moving concert is layed to perfection on this 1979 DGG record.
For those interested the greatest ever recording of the Violin Concerto is the 1936 live one by Louis Krasner who commissioned it with the orchestral part conducted by Anton Webern (on Testament).

Symphony, Shaham mesh in fearless and polished Berg
The broad opening paragraph, with its resonant open violin strings echoed by the harp, had a touch of magic to them, and the concerto's slow conclusion -- a series of variations on a chorale melody of Bach -- seemed to stop time.
The final few moments, with the violin ascending to and then resting on a stratospheric, indeed celestial, high G, were breathtaking.
Thomas also introduced Hindemith's charming, ebullient "Symphonia serena" to the Symphony repertoire, in a performance that managed to showcase nearly all the members of the orchestra.

 Berg, Mahler make intriguing combo
Berg later recast Schoenberg's methods into lyric poetry, particularly in the Violin Concerto, which winks slyly at romantic melody and basic triads -- the ABCs of harmony.
The program marries Alban Berg's Violin Concerto with Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony.
It was Schoenberg's 12-tone system that finally banished traditional tonality in favor of an ambiguous, nonobjective, expressionistic sound world.
