Verve Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verve Records, became the Verve Music Group after Polygram was merged with Seagram's Universal Music Group in 1998.
Verve Records is an American Jazz record label, founded by Norman Granz in 1956, which absorbed the catalogues of his earlier labels: Norgran Records and Clef Records (founded 1953).
Since 2002, the label has released a series of Verve Remixed compilation discs where classic tracks by Verve artists are remixed by contemporary electronic music DJs.

 Verve
By now, long-playing records had replaced 78s as listeners' format of choice, and thanks in large part to ten years' worth of ongoing Jazz at the Philharmonic releases the public was accustomed to extended live performances on record.
By the time the long-playing record album was introduced to the marketplace a few years later, the landmark Jazz at the Philharmonic release was already a part of American record buyers' vocabulary.
Although Verve would play a substantial role in popularizing the LP format and stereo recording, the quality that really set Verve apart was Granz's open-minded musical philosophy.

Interview: Jazz - all that: Verve Records celebrates forty years of iconic jazz artistry and excellence
Verve records also looked like a million bucks - an aspect increasingly ignored in the age of the incredible shrinking CD package - and the lapel's unmistakable visuals were defined by the work of legendary illustrator David Stone Martin.
His cover art suggested the elegance and swing of the typical Verve jazz recording before the listener's needle ever touched the vinyl.
Verve, the blue-chip label, recently began rereleasing memorable recordings at a rate of four or five per month, a practice it plans to continue "indefinitely." The anxiety of influence again descends upon our intrepid crew of post-baby-boomer musicians.

Making its recorded debut on this disc is Johnny Mandel's "Moon Song." "I discovered this at a tribute to Johnny Mandel which was held at The Jazz Bakery, a club in Los Angeles" relates Charlie.
In choosing to record "Precious Jewel" Haden reached back into his childhood to acknowledge the influence of The Delmore Brothers."Their records were always playing in our house," says Charlie." They were the main influence on country harmony back then.

Throughout the sixties Aaron recorded for local Louisiana labels, but it wasn't until 1966 that he broke onto the national scene with "Tell It Like It Is," the plaintive ballad that went #1 on the pop charts, a song still considered a classic in the annals of American music.
Aaron and Cyril gigged with various obscure groups in New York before returning to New Orleans in 1976 for the recording of The Wild Tchoupitoulas, the landmark album celebrating the Indian tribe whose leader, George (Big Chief Jolly) Landry, was the brothers' beloved uncle and prime musical/spiritual inspiration.
Since then, the Nevilles have released a string of hit albums both as a group and as solo artists, establishing themselves as premiere musicians of their generation.

Inevitably, there are a few miscues, most notably Max Sedgley's bombastic, Fatboy Slim-style assault on the "Peter Gunn" theme, which is hobbled from the start by its use of Sarah Vaughan's ill-advised vocal take (complete with embarrassingly lame lyrics) on Henry Mancini's famously gangsterish horn arrangement.
