Morrison would not release a follow-up album for the next 3 years.
Morrison then moved to California and released his next album, Moondance in 1970, which reached #29 on the Billboard charts.
As mentioned, he performed a duet with Cliff Richard on Morrison's 1989 album, Avalon Sunset, but he also performed with singer Tom Jones on the 1999 album Reload, with Mark Knopfler on his album Sailing to Philadelphia (2000), and with musical legend Ray Charles on his 2004 album Genius Loves Company.

 Van Morrison
Morrison's fans often cite this as their favorite album, because there aren't a lot of distractions from his distinctive, half-spoken vocals.
The liner notes brag that Morrison cut the album in two days, and you know, it sounds like it: the lyrics are stream of consciousness, and usually the tunes seesaw endlessly between two or three chords.
Morrison's moaning vocals are more poorly enunciated than ever, and he drags two of the best tunes close to the breaking point (the romantic "Angeliou," which circles around a I-IV vamp; the wild-eyed testimonial "And The Healing Has Begun").

Morrison also appeared on albums by B.B. King and Lonnie Donegan, before releasing his first album for the Virgin Records subsidiary, PointBlank, in 1999.
Line-up changes plagued the band throughout its lifespan, and at the insistence of producer Bert Berns, session musicians were used on follow-up recordings.
After the album, "His Band and the Street Choir" yielded his biggest chart hit, "Domino", Morrison released 1971's "Tupelo Honey", highlighted by the single "Wild Night".

Further proof of Morrison's renewed popularity arrived with the 1990 release of Mercury's best-of package; far and away the best-selling album of his career, it introduced the singer to a new generation of fans.
For 1988's Irish Heartbeat, however, Morrison teamed with another of his homeland's musical institutions, the famed Chieftains, for a collection of traditional folk songs.
The stunning 1974 LP Veedon Fleece chronicled Morrison's emotional turmoil; he then remained silent for three years, reportedly working on a number of aborted projects but releasing nothing until 1977's aptly titled A Period of Transition.

Even if Van Morrison retired after this album, his place in rock history would be assured, but 30 years later, he's still going strong releasing albums at a time in his life when most people would be resting on their awards.
But while Van may continue to release some quality music well into his golden years, chances are MOONDANCE will still rank as one of the best albums of not only his career, but pop music too.
Moondance is that rare rock album where the band has buffed the arrangements to perfection, and where the sax solos instead of the guitar.

WFMU's Beware of the Blog: Van Morrison's Contractual Obligation Album
In 1967, Van Morrison recorded a flurry of throw-away songs in a single recording session in New York City in order to meet his contractual obligation to Bang Records, with whom he was none too happy.
In 1967 or thereabouts Van Morrison wanted to get out of his contract with a record label, so he fulfilled his obligation by making up 31 songs and recording them in a single sitting.

 Van Morrison's "Moondance"
Van Morrison remains one of rock's most enigmatic figures, and today, nearly 35 years since the recording of his most famous album, Moondance, most of his fans know little about him.
“Van went up to Woodstock to be with his family and I ended up mixing the entire record with Gary Mallaber, the drummer in his band.
I ended up working with Van on several projects, including ‘Brown Eyed Girl.’ Elliot was the engineer on that record and I was his setup man. I ended up finishing one of Van's albums; I don't remember which one, though.

It is the most reflective song on the CD with Van taking a retrospective of his life and looking back to a time less jaded.
Whether you agree with the critics who claim Magic Time is inspired Van Morrison or with those who feel it is simply more of the same, one cannot deny the genius of Van’s own lyrical writings and his musical interpretations of the cover pieces included on the CD.
Fans have grown weary of Van’s persistent slam of the music industry from which he has made his living.

The place was bleak and barren, with little more than a mattress on the floor, a refrigerator, an acoustic guitar and a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
Eventually, Van managed to assemble a two-piece acoustic band and booked himself at a coffeehouse/jazz club that could only be described as subterranean.
Unfortunately, the audience didn't want this "unknown" singer changing the familiar delivery of a song that was fast becoming a true rock classic.

 Robert Christgau: CG: Artist 1647
Morrison is still a brooder--"Why did you leave America?" he asks over and over on the final cut, and though I'm not exactly sure what he's talking about, that sounds like a good all-purpose question/accusation to me--but not an obsessive one, and this is another half-step away from the acoustic late-night misery of Astral Weeks.
Songs that wore poorly or were just lame in the first place have more force and rightness on this exemplary live album than in their studio versions, and "Here Comes the Night" sounds fresher than it did in 1965.
In addition, Morrison documents his debt to blues and randb definitively--you can hear Bobby Bland all over the record, and cover tributes are paid as well to Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, and Sam Cooke.

Free Music Blog: Van Morrison / Chieftains Muisc
The emotionalism of Irish folk music is heard with uncommonly graceful renditions of "Carrickfergus" and "She Moved Through the Fair." Morrison's decidedly mature and raw voice gives these renditions a tinge of time-weathered poignancy and rue which is frequently absent when the songs are performed by singers of a younger and finely-trained voice.
The Chieftains have collaborated musically with a wide spectrum of creative artists, ranging from James Galway to the Rolling Stones.
