 The Uilleann Pipes
Previously the pipes could be pitched in anything from around B flat to C sharp; the Taylor pipes were in a way a product of market forces, since they produced the greater volume needed to fill the American concert and music halls, where Irish music was a flourishing industry.
Whatever the case, the regulators, thought by many to be an integral component of the uilleann pipes, seem to have been grafted on (is it accidental that they are inserted into that part of the pipes known as the stock?) to accommodate non-Irish music.
The pipes are in many ways a curious hybrid: since Irish music is essentially melodic, it may be thought that the regulators, which permit harmonic accompaniment, are unnecessary.

Liam O'Flynn - Tools of the Trade
One of the secrets of listening to pipe music is to attune the ear to hear not just the drone and a chanter but the cords they create together (such as, with Highland pipes, an apparent fifth, a note that is there even though nothing is producing it).
Many people, drawn to their exciting music, heard the uilleann pipes for the first time and were struck by their power, their expressiveness.
Davy Spillane uses his like a jazz saxophonist and they are a crucial ingredient to the mix of the most successful fusion band of the moment, Afro-Celt Sound System.

Uilleann Pipes and Howling Dogs - Irish Culture
When you’re listening to “Danny Boy,” and they get to the bit about “the pipes, the pipes, they’re calling,” it’s fairly certain that it’s the haunting sound of the uilleann pipes that are doing the calling.
The thing of it is, you might have thought you were listening to a flute, a fiddle, or maybe even a piccolo; that’s the thing about this very strange-looking instrument; it has a chameleon-like tendency to sound like whatever the piper wishes it to...theoretically.
If you’re a fan of the modern-day traditional Irish band, Danu, you’ve already heard the uilleann pipes.

The two unaccompanied solos by Taylor on the album are the traditional "Girl of the House/The Holly Bush," played on uilleann pipes, and her own "The Happy Union," played on Northumbrian pipes.
But it is Becky Taylor's piping that finally carries this album aloft.
"My piping career started on the Northumbrian smallpipes back in 1983 after badgering a school music teacher for a set of Irish pipes," she wrote in a liner note for her self-titled, self-issued debut CD in England.

 Can I Learn Uilleann Pipes?
Conversely, I strongly encourage experienced musicians who cannot play "by ear" to follow the aural method because it helps the piper grow into the music the same way it was created, and to adapt to playing in traditional dance bands and jam "sessiuns."
Pipes are usually not good instruments for people who want to play very casually and infrequently as many of us do with a tin whistle, a set of musical spoons etc., or for those who want to carry an instrument in a backpack for cycling and camping.
Obviously this instrument, even the bare practice set consisting of bag, bellows and chanter, is more complex than most folk or traditional instruments.
