Always a difficult band to pigeonhole, they originally sounded like a space-age pop revival band, an ambient band, or a chamber pop band; "twee pop" is perhaps the most accurate catchall.
While the designation "twee pop" is somewhat vague, with room to include many otherwise disparate acts, it does represent an actual movement of sorts, one that consciously avoided the heavy styles that dominated the early 90's, and instead provided hummable pretty music with minimal posturing and affectation.

They have their own names for themselves (popkids, popgeeks) and for the music they listen to (p!o!p, twee, anorak, C-86).
For their musical cues, they looked to the quaintest, least-cool roots of youth-culture music: girl-groups, 1960s guitar jangle, bubblegum chirp, rainy-day balladry.
Most important of all, they matched elegant pop sing-alongs with sharp content, in lyrics that took indie-kid life with a sometimes-cutting seriousness: Their P.U.N.K. Girl EP is so bouncy and full of hooks that it can take a while to notice it's kind of a concept record about date rape.

Power Pop first surfaced in the early 70's and its invention is generally credited to a trio of bands that were fairly underappreciated in their own time: Badfinger (from Wales), Big Star (Memphis), and the Raspberries (Mentor, OH).
Renewed interest in power pop and 20/20 led to a brief revival of the band in the mid 90's; they released two more albums, but failed to drum up many sales.
Power pop remained a viable style until about 1983, but as MTV gained popularity, interests shifted to the new wave of video artists, and the power pop bands vanished from the charts.
