Topic: Tropicalia

 The Land Beyond
Tropicalia was a spontaneous movement in culture and music, typical of the sixties.
The song itself is an oblique paean to the 'Tropicalia' movement in Brazilian popular music during the late 1960's; a feverish attempt to merge high and low brow taste, folk music and city sophistication with avant-garde string arrangements atop complex African rhythm patterns.
Tropicalia is pervaded by the thin flat guitar that laced even the most romantic ballad with harsh and astringent tones.

Os Mutantes was one of Tropicalia's biggest bands.
There is this album called 'Technicolor', made in 1970 but not released until 2000.
Tropicalia incorporated music that was happening elsewhere in the world that had, until then, been ignored by Brazil: Rock, Soul, Pop, everything that was being invented elsewhere.

just for a day: birthing tropicalia
The music that arose, Tropicalia, is bound together more by an ideology of social awareness and the drive to be musically creative than by any single set of musical characteristics.
Comparing the songs of tropicalia musicians, it can be discerned that the greatest common bond is in the lyrics, which are well thought-out, keyed to musical events of the accompaniment, poetic, elegant, and above all, socially aware.
In the late '60s, a new Brazilian popular music arose in direct reaction to social complacency stemming from the coup of 1964 and the musical clichés of pop music.

 Tropicalismo : Tropicalia
Tropicalismo, otherwise known as Tropicalia, is a form of Brazilian music that arose in the late 1960s out of bossa nova and rock and roll influences.
Its hit single, "Tropicalia", went as high as #21 on the Billboard Modern Rock singles chart.
In 1998, Beck released Mutations (album), the title of which is a tribute to Tropicalismo pioneers Os Mutantes.

One day Emiliano comes to rehearsal and says, "what do you guys think of Bat Macumba?" I thought it was a good idea, the song being such a seminal one for Tropicalia, composed by Gil and Caetano and recorded by Os Mutantes, with nonsensical lyrics that symbolize a lot.

Tropicalia was announced at a festival in October 1967 by two now-famous songs: Veloso's Alegria, Alegria and Gil's Domingo No Parque.

But a couple of weeks ago two great Brazilian albums, Tom Ze's Com Defeito de Fabricacao (Fabrication Defect) (Luaka Bop) and the debut album by Virginia Rodrigues, Sol Negro (Hannibal), were released in the U.S., and though they couldn't be more different, both are undeniably products of tropicalia.

An artist so stylistically impure may seem a strange conduit for world music, but Brazilian music doesn’t hew to the Western ideal of world music as evolving, or remaining forever arrested, along pristine folkways isolated from outside influences.

Dunn also deftly tells the story of tropicalia's explosive growth as a subversive, psychedelic musical genre, and the harsh political repression it was met with by the dictatorship which held power from 1964 to 1985.

In this matrix of poltical and nationalistic uncertainty, and through the use of pastiche, dissassociative imagery, irony, parody, and a concern with the everyday frustrations of Brazilians, they construct an insurgent music that gains a wide reach and audience, while mostly flying underneath the dictatorship's radar screen.

Worst than that, the movement that shocked Brazilian middle-class culture in late '60's is the ground zero of an entertainment dictatorship that blocks the most outstanding legacy the country gave the world: its own music, rich and colorful.
For length reasons, it's a two-part article: in this first, we'll see the Tropicalia agenda getting into action; in the second, how the ghost of a psychedelic year endorsed the standardization of Brazilian music that led to the cultural empoverishment the country went throughout the 1990's.

One of those artists, Helio Oiticica, called his installation "Tropicalia" -- a word that, the following year, became the title of one of the most famous Brazilian pop albums featuring Caetano Veloso and others.
By the end of 1968, Tropicalia expanded into a loosely organized cultural phenomenon whose major theme was Brazil's confident eclecticism, which was producing a distinctive hybrid style in music, visual art, literature, theater, film, architecture, fashion, food and advertising.

Rather, Dunn's history is vaguely top-down, told through the lens of significant concerts, television specials and record releases.
Rather than reject her, Dunn explains that Veloso wrote her name into his song "Tropicalia" to "recover" and "dislocate" her, reading her tragic break from the Brazilian canon as an allegory of Brazilian culture and its reception abroad.

Titled "Tropicalia," Giersbach's stunningly innovative work draws on a welter of cultural references- among them conceptual art, installation art, architecture, photography and computer graphics-to articulate her unique vision of an amplified, up-to-date, hybrid painting practice.
Recreating in "Tropicalia" a nearly perfect visual analogue to the cultural disorientation experienced on encountering the weird simulacra of an Indian theme park, Cadence Giersbach's warping, perspective shifting, vibrantly colored paintings posit a final, even larger-scaled pictorial illusion: an image of the ongoing, globalizing superimposition of one type of culture and cultural display onto another.
Taking as her starting point a set of snap shots the artist took of an empty theme park outside of Madras, India, Giersbach recreates the falsified nature of this Western transplant to the East inside the precincts of an equally rarefied cultural space: the contemporary art gallery.
