Trombone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trombone parts are typically notated in bass clef; it is also common for trombone music to be written in tenor clef or alto clef.
They are called for in some trombone choir literature, the sopranino, for example, being used in the Moravian trombone choirs in the USA.
In brass band music, however, the trombone is treated like all the other members (except the bass trombone) as a transposing instrument in B flat and reads the treble clef.

 Trombone History
Wide-bore models of the Bb/F trombone are often termed 'bass trombone', and are used for the lowest of the three Trombone parts that have normally been written in orchestral and band music.
Alto trombones in Eb or F. commonly used from the 16th century to the 18th as the top voice in the brass choir (see fig.5 below), declined in popularity from the early 19th century, when trombone became an established pan of the symphony orchestra.
19th century composers often limited themselves to a stereotyped usage of the trombone for reinforcement of tutti passages and for background harmonies in soft passages; because of the preponderance of 19th-century music in 20th-century concert programmes, it is with these least interesting sides of the trombone's character that audiences are most familiar.

As the Romantic era rolled around, the trombone became a standard part of the orchestra, while still enjoying its role as a solo instrument and its use in vocal settings.
In the 1800's, the trombone became increasingly important in the orchestra, particularly in the symphonies of Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, as well as, Brahms.
Today, thanks to its versatility, the trombone is used in virtually every genre from symphonies to commercial jazz.
