Tremolo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tremolo on a violin or similar instrument is sometimes combined with playing sul ponticello (over the bridge of the instrument), which gives a thin and reedy effect, often perceived to be "ghostly."
In music notation, tremolo is indicated by strokes through the stems of the notes (in the case of semibreves or whole notes, which lack stems, the bars are drawn above or below the note, where the stem would be if there were one).
Tremolo is a musical term with several meanings:

 MMD Archives: Orchestral Tremolo
If the tremolo is realistic then, the tone will not die away, and between a dozen or so violins, it gives the effect of a tremolo to the orchestra.
So it is musically correct but scientifically incorrect to say that tremolo is the continual interruption of a note, and that by see-sawing the bow on a violin string, you are creating true pure tremolo as a physicist would define it.
So while the violins are vibrating (shaking) their bows on a string and creating a "tremolo" effect all together, the piano is definitely not "machine-gunning" a note to do the same.

This acoustical phenomenon is complemented by the human perception of a rapid vibrato as a tremolo (Winckel 1967).
Greater possibilites for timbral vibrato might be offered by the manipulation of tonal colour possible with innovative instruments such as Michael Barker's "MIDIfied recorder" or Philippe Bolton's electro-acoustic recorder.
It seems to go a little dead on us; and this is the acoustic consideration which makes vibrato a natural rather than an artificial recourse on melodic instruments.

Early tremolo arms tended to cause the guitar to go out of tune with extended use; an important innovator in this field was Floyd Rose, who introduced one of the first tremolos which allowed the guitar to stay in tune, even after heavy use.
English progressive rock bands such as Genesis took this trend to its zenith using custom made instruments produced by the Shergold company.

Academically, tremolo is a fluctuation of amplitude applied to a sound of constant frequency.

 MMD Archives: Tremolo and Vibrato
In my writing, I stay with the traditional usage of "vibrato" for violin machines and orchestrions, and "tremolo" for dance organs.
"Tremolo," as defined in professional music dictionaries including "The Harvard Dictionary of Music" by Willi Apel, is the rapid reiteration (or repetition) of the same tone, produced by rapidly reversing the bow on stringed instruments.
The pipes frequently play without vibrato, so if they were tuned below pitch they would be out of tune whenever the vibrato mechanism was not called for by the music roll.
