Flute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flute is a musical instrument of the woodwind family.
The piccolo is an octave higher in pitch, but has the same written notation for music as the concert flute.
With rare exceptions (i.e., flutes with custom-made fingering-systems), the Boehm system is the fingering-system in correspondence with which Western concert flutes are designed and manufactured.

One avid collector of the instrument was the Academia Filarmonica of Verona.
In common practice music this is would not be the norm since the flute would actually be playing higher than the melody line.
In doing so, this would place the modes in an excellent range for a flute family in F-C-G. If the same suggestion would be followed using a G-D-A flute family, this would result in a B flat in the A flute part which is a near impossibility.

For proper music (not only signals) each regiment had a band which at first used shawms, which were replaced by oboes, and later by clarinets.
The current Swedish word for recorder is "blockflöjt", but recorders were not used in classical music from around 1800 until 1926, so there should be no risk for confusion with them during the period I've looked at.
