Tony Williams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1975, Williams put together a band he called 'The New Tony Williams Lifetime', featuring bassist Tony Newton, pianist Alan Pasqua, and English guitarist Allan Holdsworth, which recorded two albums for Columbia Records (Believe It and Million Dollar Legs respectively).
But perhaps his overarching achievement was in demonstrating, through his playing, that the drummer need not be relegated to timekeeping and accompaniment in a jazz ensemble; that the drummer may be free to contribute to the performance as an equal partner in the improvisation.
This band played Williams' compositions almost exclusively (the Lennon/McCartney song "Blackbird", the standard "Poinciana", and the Freddie Hubbard blues "Birdlike" being the exceptions) and toured and recorded throughout the remainder of the '80s, into the early '90s.

Williams recorded several albums with Davis that are considered classics, including Four and More, Sorcerer, Nefertiti and In A Silent Way.
Williams' final album, released just weeks before his death, was titled Wilderness and featured Hancock, saxophonist Michael Brecker, guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Stanley Clarke, along with a full orchestra.
During the six years he was with Davis, Williams also released two solo albums, Lifetime and Spring, on which he revealed his affinity for the avant-garde style of jazz.

Tony Williams - DRUMMERWORLD OFFICIAL DISCUSSION FORUM
Tony raised the bar that sets the standard for musicality for drummers and conviction for composers.
There's not many drummers who've been on the forefront of new music in the way that Tony was with his first Lifetime record.
I really should listen to some of his more recent recordings though, I don't think I've listened to anything newer than 1980 or so in any depth.

THE PLATTERS "GOLDEN ERA" TRIBUTE PAGE
But I am willing to bet that 99% of the record sales resulted from sales of the songs that were recorded by Tony Williams and The Platters between 1955 and 1960.
The lead singer, Tony Williams had a wonderful voice and that voice separated The Platters completely from the other rock stars of the era.
Over the years The Platters (in their various incarnations) have recorded over 400 songs and sold over 80 million records.

 CMT.com : Tony Williams : Biography
Williams (who could be a very loud drummer) seemed so youthful, healthy, and ageless even though he had been a major drummer for nearly 35 years.
After breaking up his longtime quintet in 1995, Williams gigged a bit with a trio, recorded a very interesting set of original music for the Ark 21 label, and seemed to have a limitless future.
Williams, who was 18 when he appeared on Eric Dolphy's classic Out to Lunch album, stayed with Davis into 1969, leading his own occasional sessions and becoming a household name in the jazz world.

 The Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency!
In a chapter on guitarist John McLaughlin, Mandel mentioned a band that Tony Williams had put together that was a huge influence on Bitches Brew, so I had to check it out.
But the glue of the record wasn't just Williams, it was the explosive combination of the Lifetime band with McLaughlin and organist Larry Young.
Their expansive sound within the confines of a trio is pure genius.

 Tony Williams: Lifetime The Anthology
Oddly released just weeks before his untimely death at 51, this double disc set filled with a data-busting two and 1/2 hours of music, is a moving testament to one of the most adventurous, talented and downright mind blowing drummers in jazz.
Songs, actually jams, were often built on riffs, only to be abandoned for wildly innovative (and loud) improvisation, and hooked back up at various points throughout their extended lengths.
Since all of these cuts are not currently available on any other disc, this is an essential album for anyone remotely influenced by Hendrix or Miles and a must for jazz lovers who missed out on Tony Williams the first time around.
