Tone row - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tone row may also be used to describe other musical collections or scales such as in Arab music.
This tone row consists of alternating minor and major triads starting on the open strings of the violin, followed by a portion of an ascending whole tone scale.
Tone rows were widely used in 20th century classical music.

International Clarinet Association - ClarinetFest Archives
A 12-tone row is a pattern containing all 12 notes of the chromatic scale, and is used as the foundation for both melody and harmony.
Locate the 12-tone row in the music and notate it on the staff.
In Smith's music, the row is always the first 12 different notes of the piece; in music by other composers, however, it may be necessary to resort to a guess-and-check method in order to find the row.

 12-Tone Row, Serial Music Lesson
It is regarded as an ordered set of pitch classes in which a precise series of musical intervals (various distances between notes) or their inversions is maintained throughout a piece, occurring in various transformations.

Twelve-tone technique - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although usually atonal, twelve tone music need not be - several pieces by Berg, for instance, have tonal elements.

Both melody and harmony may be created in this way.

 TWELVE-TONE COMPOSITION, Part One
A row (as an ordered collection of intervals) can be designed to emphasize certain intervals.
The intervals in example 11 are arranged in a symmetrical pattern.
When the intervals are identified by interval classes numbers, the retrograde-inversion symmetry becomes apparent.

The Relationship Between Contrapuntal and Serial Composition Techniques as Seen in Webern and Stravinsky
In freely atonal music, this 'basic shape' came from a small intervallically significant cell of pitches, and later the tone row itself took on the role of the melodic and harmonic unifying device.
One of the earliest examples of an organic, or procedurally unified musical structure in music history is the repeating melody of different length than the repeating rhythm in which it is presented, or isorhythm, prevalent in the fourteenth-century motets of Philippe de Vitry and Guillaume de Machaut.
To Schoenberg and his students, the purpose of twelve-tone technique was primarily avoidance of tonality through the systematic creation of a 'democracy of tones.' Experimental music without tonality prior to the development of the twelve-tone process seldom succeeded in offering enough musical cohesion to allow for movements of considerable length.

The tone row is the basic unit of twelve-tone music.
If you arrange the twelve tones of the chromatic scale in an ascending line, as we did above, you can count the number of notes (half-steps) between two tones to determine the interval.
You can see how tedious it would be to listen to a composition based on the same precise ordering of tones, over and over ad nauseum.

Music Associates of America ~ MadAminA! Reflections
The real tone row of the first movement of the "Lyric Suite" is simply the cycle of perfect fifths, segmented into two halves of six notes each.
There is a second type of symmetry that is "natural" to the language of twelve-tone music, and this plays as significant a role in much of the music of Bartok as it does in Schoenberg's twelve-tone system.
When we are talking about tonal music we can take two pieces that are as far apart in time and style as the second English Suite of Bach and the Prelude to "Tristan and Isolde" and say of both that they are in the key of A minor.

 12 tone music
However, the prime row is not usually used by itself to create a piece of music.
In order to write a piece of twelve-tone music, the composer decides upon the order in which the pitches are to occur.
Every note in a piece of twelve-tone music must be derived somehow from the prime row.

MUS 312 Form & Analysis, Study Guide M
In analyzing the use of rows in a serial piece, it is often enough to label the row forms (P-0, etc.) without writing the order numbers on the music.
For example, the first hexachord (scale of six notes) of Berg's row from the Lyric Suite in retrograde and transposed by a tritone would produce the second hexachord, so the row is a derived set.
Some rows are composed so as to emphasize particular intervals, as is the case above, while others are not.

 Twelve-tone music of Arnold Schoenberg
The following tone row is drawn from Schoenberg Suite for Piano Op.
Except in a deliberate design devoted to a particular interval, a row generally contains a balanced number of seconds, thirds, fourths or fifths, and tritones (Ulehla, 470).
As you can see, the matrix and the basic concept of the melodic writing of twelve tone music is already confusing.

The general comments of Friskin and Freundlich concerning Krenek’s twelve-tone piano music are particularly appropriate with regard to Twenty Miniatures: “Those piano pieces of Krenek written in the twelve-tone manner exhibit a compromise between a ruthless, linear writing (with minimum consideration for the traditional vertical aspects of sound) and the conventional tonal organization of music.
As Krenek observes in Studies in Counterpoint Based on the Twelve-Tone Technique, atonal music is music which is not organized according the principle of major and minor keys.
In Eight Piano Pieces (Opus 110, 1946), all eight pieces are based on the same series.

 MICROCOSMS: Serialism
The row provides an organic unity, subliminal in nature, to a piece of music.
Write a Serial piece for two different wind or bowed instruments which you do not play (both parts at concert pitch), one page or less, which is a complete musical thought.
It is important to understand the 12-tone row is a tool, or an abstraction of pitch classes, and is not the music itself.

 Stravinsky's Topology: CHAPTER 1 Introduction
In his twelve-tone music, Stravinsky carefully chose tone rows designed to reinforce structural or poetic-textual events.
Whenever intervals are mentioned where direction is not important, they will always be presented as the smallest interval class (ic).
In his vocal twelve-tone music, Stravinsky employed similar techniques for both voices and instruments in his choice of rows.

Schoenberg sometimes indicated which part was the "hauptstimme" and which part was the "nebenstimme" (which some later serial composers considered an "old-fashioned" approach)

 The Method Continued
It is helpful to think of the row as a succession of intervals, and to think of the intervals as numbers of half-steps.
In manipulations of the row, these intervals are preserved, though the direction of each interval changes for inversion.
For example, in this tone row, the interval between the first and second pitches is a tritone, or 6 half-steps; the interval between the second and third pitches is a whole step or 2 half-steps; from the third pitch to the forth pitch is a minor 3rd, or 3 half steps, and so on.

 Tone Rows
Existing analyses of Dallapiccola's music concentrate exclusively on the derivation of rows used in a given work and the correspondences and relationships between their melodic components.
Like traditional 12-tone composers, Dallapiccola often uses rows in a linear fashion, presenting them as one-dimensional strings.
In general terms, a 12-tone row is a string of notes that can be shaped, molded, and arranged into motives or themes.

Arnold Schoenberg, in an effort to explore new melodic territory in Western music, proposed a method of composition commonly called serialism, in which all twelve tones are arranged sequentially in a string, sifting through the tokens to find coherence.
It was one of Western Art Music's first encounters with atonalty, the restlessness of melodic forms, refusing to settle on one key.
But Tone Row Poetry is a writing machine unlike most you've encountered.

 Introduction to Twelve-Tone Theory
In fact, this particular way of proceeding has been the basis of numerous computer music compositions because it is so easily done with a computer.
A "series" is sometimes called a "set" or a "row." Beware of the potential for confusion when calling it a set (a set denotes a a collection without order and a 12-tone row, is, by definition, ordered).
Analogy: It's the difference between a machine that is built to do one task and a computer which can be reconfigured for a variety of tasks.

From Stoneage to Rock and Roll
The row can be played up-side down or inverted, by reversing the order of each interval.
One of the first works incorporating only 12-tone rows is his Suite, Op.
So, there can be 48 possible scale combinations from a single 12-tone row!
