Tommy was signed by Nemperor records to record a solo album.
Within weeks Bolin was back on the road touring with a solo band, and he began planning a second solo record.
While the band never released an album during Bolin's lifetime, several posthumous releases have demonstrated the band's power and Bolin's artistic vision.

Now, thus claim the liner notes, have surfaced rehearsal recordings that show Tommy Bolin to be the right one to carry on the band with.
"Come Taste the Band", which was released in 1975 with replacement guitarist Tommy Bolin, was quite an alright CD but didn't quite capture the energy and especially the virtuosity of former material.

Tommy was one of the greatest and still a huge influence on me as a guitarist, composer and songwriter.....
It's hard to listen to the music of Tommy Bolin and not wonder what could've been if the exceptionally talented (and versatile) guitarist hadn't succumbed to a senseless drug overdose at the age of 25 -- just as his career appeared to be taking off.
And while Bolin's arrival didn't return the group back to the top of the charts, a pair of quite underrated albums were issued, 1973's Bang and 1974's Miami, as the guitarist also sang lead for the first time on record.

Bolin's musical influences certainly dovetailed nicely with Hughes' funkier leanings, and the resultant studio release, Come Taste the Band, was decidedly Deep Purple's funkiest record.
Bolin didn't try to copy Blackmore, so this album sounds different to any other Purple album.
Bolin replaced Blackmore and he has some very fine moments on this album: Comin' home, Love child and You keep on movin' stand out from the rest.

I suspect that Tommy would still be playing and producing some hit records although in the state of the music industry it's hard to say for sure.
The album was every bit as inspired as the work Cobham had done with Mahavishnu Orchestra, and featured young guitarist Tommy Bolin laying down some very forward-thinking and complex riffs.
The first time that I met Tommy was after I heard him perform with Zephyr at an open air music festival, I believe in West Virginia at a race track.

Tommy Bolin was a great guitarist, Come Taste The Band is very underrated.
Greg Prato of Billboard.com is reporting that former DEEP PURPLE/JAMES GANG guitarist Tommy Bolin's younger brother, Johnnie, has been working closely with producer Greg Hampton on outtakes from the recording sessions of Bolin's lone two solo releases, 1975's "Teaser" and 1976's "Private Eyes", for future release.

As the opening act for Blue Oyster Cult, Tommy does not get the sound check one would like to have for such a recording, so there are some feedback problems, guitar tuning problems and Tommy’s guitar is missing from the assigned track for the first part of Teaser.
The separation of instruments is definitely the cleanest and clearest of any live Bolin Band recording we have heard yet.
The great live recording quality Tommy has always deserved, the great playing you know he was capable of, the band completely in sympathy with each other, and some of Tommy’s most passionate singing.

Bolin had reported suffered a substance complication prior to recording which had affected the use of his picking hand while playing guitar, and it drastically shows here.
I truly love Tommy Bolin and his music, and I stand by that when I say COme Taste the Band is Purple's finest recording ever.
His playing is sloppy, a bit out of tune, and for the most part, a bit unbearable to listen to.

For all of its brilliance this is definitely not the best that Deep Purple has ever sounded live and finally this release is not to be missed by even the most transient fans of either Deep Purple or Tommy Bolin.
there are only a few good performances on this incredible-sounding two-fer live set (tommy's guitar tone is ripping and the lord and paicey sound tops per usual).

In 1995 we had the release of "On the Wings of a Russian Foxbat", a double CD recorded during the American leg of their tour.
I like the album quite a bit, and will be playing it quite a few times to come.
However, it also means that you can hear Bolin totally fuck up the guitar part of "Lazy" for example.
