Today (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The song also appeared on the band's greatest hits album Rotten Apples.
Still, this darker side of the song is partially hidden in the soft instrumental part that is played in the verses, which made many listeners unaware of the song's tale of depression and desperation.
It originally appeared on their 1993 album Siamese Dream, from which it was the second single.

 Art Songs & Song Cycles
Some songs may be strophic, in which a tune is repeated for each stanza (in the manner of church hymns); or through-composed (or durchkomponiert) in which there are different musical settings for each stanza, usually adding more drama to the song.
Today, the art song is alive and well in America.
Today, living contemporary composers of "serious music" continue to write song cycles.

 Today - Brian Doerksen
The second track is the song 'Everlasting', which is a building declaration song that is vibrant and memorable, and ripe for use in churches.
From the understatement of pop influence on this album, to the inter-generational song selection, to the orchestral arrangements, to the blends of vocal leads, choirs, and children- Doerksen looks more at home on this album than any to date.
And like much of the new songs on this album, it is a well-crafted collaborative songwriting effort.

National Review: The Song Is Ended - analysis of pop music today
Terry Teachout's recent articles in Commentary on the American popular song testify to a wonderfully rich tradition of melodic and harmonic inspiration, which is scarcely separable from the development of modern music generally.
The Queen herself celebrated the jubilee with a public rendition of a Beatles song, and the aging Brian May played the national anthem on his electric guitar before a million loyal subjects.
Hence the emergence of rap, from which the arts of melody and of song itself have been finally abolished.

The song, which has a gospel feel with hints of the Motown sound mixed in, was written by John Nixon of Coda Music in Birmingham and sung by Detroiter Greg C. Brown.
Monforton said the song is the first new song for the bureau since the 1997 song, "It's a great time in Detroit."
If the song can capture Detroit's musical heritage, it should be a success, said John Colbert, co-owner of Baker's Keyboard Lounge on the city's west side.

The reason I played the song for them was not because the lyrics had some particular message (though, oddly, they do have some lyrics that at least suggest what I had to say), but rather because I thought it was one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard.
The song was "Bittersweet Symphony." As the song played, you could see the students sitting on the edge of their seats, straining to hear every word, trying to figure out what in the world this crazy prof was trying to get across with playing this song.
Instead of posting the lyrics to one song and commenting upon them, I want to tell a story today about music.

Song for Today - Matthew Fries - TCB Music
Half of the ten tracks are his, and in the style of many jazz performers today he didn't limit himself to jazz standards on the others but drew from pop songs such as James Taylor's Fire and Rain - given a wonderfully lyrical and original treatment here.
To his credit, Fries wrote about half of the tunes on Song for Today, and he also deserves credit for interpreting songs that haven't been done to death in the jazz world.
"Young Lions" aren't trying to be innovative, and no one would use that word to describe Song for Today-a likable, if derivative, effort that was recorded in 1998 but often sounds like it could have been recorded in the 1960s.
