The X Factor (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The tour for the album, like the tour for their next album, Virtual XI, was cut short after Blaze suffered a violent allergic reaction to certain elements used on the stages where the band performed.
Many Maiden-fans regard the album as being the darkest in the band's history, being both quite melancholy and political.
It is notable for being the band's first album to include Blaze Bayley, formerly of Wolfsbane, as vocalist, replacing Bruce Dickinson who left the band to work on solo projects, after getting tired of touring with Iron Maiden.

The album was a spectacular success, the sound of a band on the crest of a wave.
Iron Maiden was a roughly-produced album, but reached number 4 in the UK album listings on the back of touring stints with Judas Priest and enduringly popular material such as Phantom of The Opera.
Piece Of Mind was not dissimilar to the previous album, showcasing the strong twin guitar bite of Murray and Smith, coupled with memorable vocal lines and a sound which fitted their air-punching dynamic perfectly.

 METALEATER.COM - Album Reviews - Iron Maiden - The X Factor
I know that I've described this album in a general sense, without giving much attention to specific songs, but "The X Factor" is more of an album experience than a song experience, something that needs to be soaked-up in its long, drawn out entirety.
And even though that album has the word "dark" in its title, "The X Factor" remains MAIDEN's darkest, most difficult album to date.
The "X" is certainly appropriate, as "The X Factor" is IRON MAIDEN's 10th studio album, and if you paid attention in algebra, you'll know that "x" also refers to something variable or unknown.

 The Iron Maiden Commentary
The album is a refreshingly dark and introspective exploration of the psyche – gone are the overly happy sounds that crippled the previous two albums.
It is another of the few up-tempo songs on the album, and, although the guitar solos are quite short and the song itself is not quite as deep as some of the other material on the album, it's a really good little rocker from a musical point of view.
Overall however, The X Factor is a dark and melancholy masterpiece which revitalised the band after the slow decline which reached rock-bottom with the departure of Dickinson.

Not a perfect album by any means, those looking for rawer bootleg thrills would be better off spending a few hours downloading the myriad efforts available on most file sharing networks, but if you're looking for an intelligent pure pop album then there won't be many to beat X Factor this year.
A collaboration with Liberty X swiftly followed, a shotgun wedding between Chaka Khan and the Human League, and likewise soon made itself at home at the top end of the charts.
Ah the irony, for an album cobbled together from large chunks of other people's records Richard X's record company sure aren't taking any chances that the filthy bootleggers could have their wicked way here.

Review: "Iron Maiden: The X Factor" - Sea of Tranquility - The Web Destination for Progressive Music!
The X Factor is a great album, and I'll go so far as to put it up there with Maiden's signature album from their glory days, Somewhere In Time.
But it's a surprisingly mature album, both in songwriting and execution, and satisfies in ways their older work never did.
The three-minute guitar runs are still there, but rather than being showcases for the guitarists, they are instead part of the song, a bridge from one part to the other, and the big picture is often ambitious and grand.
