The Stranger (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While his four previous albums were moderately successful, this was his breakthrough album, peaking at #2 on the U.S. album charts.
The Stranger is the fifth studio album by Billy Joel, released in 1977 (see 1977 in music).
It remains Joel's best-selling non-compilation album to date.

Below is an exclusive insight into Marc's thoughts on the album, followed by a track by track description.
I hope this will be my most successful solo album.
A number of songs were originally written and co-produced with regular Neal Whitmore but the main collaborator on ‘Stranger Things’ is Icelandic producer Johann Johanson who was brought in to oversee production on the whole album and also to contribute in the writing of several songs.

Even the sound of the album is pretty consistent, it does change from song to song.
The word is that Lina’s album was finished first, but there was a rush put on Blu’s album to beat the release of Lina’s.
The album begins with one of it’s strongest track “Playa No Mo’” which is the single if you’ve heard of Lina, that you would most likely be familiar with.

 BILLY JOEL-The Stranger
The album (which was his commercial breakthrough) features all of Billy Joel's strengths: a sure sense of melody and pop songcraft, affecting balladry, nimble piano playing, and dry humor.
The album closes out with "Get It Right the First Time" and "Everybody has a Dream," both of which are listenable but pale in comparison to the songs that preceded them.
The album's first half concludes with the rousing song suite "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," which is about two old high school friends who reunite to discuss their present-day lives and fondly reminisce about days gone by.

This is not their best album, but a mediocre album from a creative band is better than most radio-ready pop.

Up a cliché without an oar - Arts
The tracks on the album are boring and forgettable-the kind you start listening to and then can't stand after about 30 seconds.
At times the album's instrumentation is truer to reggae than anything else OAR has produced, but lead singer Marc Roberge's happy-go-lucky lyrics are amiss.
For many bands there's a make-it or break-it album where they go out on a limb and attempt to innovative their music.

"Stranger" immediately pulls the listener in with the gently oom-pah-pah of the first track, "Measure Me," and weaves a hypnotic spell from there on in with it's loping and laid-back folky/country pop.

Death Cab for Cutie: The Photo Album: Pitchfork Review
The album opens quietly with the brief, sleepy "Steadier Footing," a glimpse at a relationship that seems fated not to be.
It seems as though Ben Gibbard, on his latest outing with Death Cab for Cutie, the band's third album in just three years, has attempted to capture in his lyrics the verbal equivalent of amateur photography.
Such moments haunt the remainder of the album, as well, though they're generally not too distracting.

By and large this album is no exception.
To try avoid the common solo career pitfall of sounding like a diet version of your former self, Torgerson chose to record most of this, her debut album, in Greece with the help of Akis Boyatzis a.k.a.
It begins with the faint promise of Pelagic, a slice of Tanya Donnelly-style indie-rock that kicks into gear when the guitars gatecrash the chorus, but the trio of so-so songs that follow are soon washed away by the wave of crud to come.

Willie Nelson : Red Headed Stranger - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger perhaps is the strangest blockbuster country produced, a concept album about a preacher on the run after murdering his departed wife and her new lover, told entirely with brief song-poems and utterly minimal backing.
For all its success, it still remains a prickly, difficult album, though, making the interspersed concept of Phases and Stages sound shiny in comparison.
It's undoubtedly distinctive -- and it sounds more distinctive with each passing year -- but it's strictly an intellectual triumph and, after a pair of albums that were musically and intellectually sound, it's a bit of a letdown, no matter how successful it was.

Stranger performances are a twisted combination of basement punk shows, Southern Baptist evangelism, and vaudeville cabaret burlesque.
Hammes' vocal style is an often violent combination of Presley and Danzig crooning with Tom Waits grit, and a delivery between Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Morrissey, if such a thing is possible.
Marrying Keith Moon style chaos on the drum kit with Elvis' Blue Moon Boys on guitar and stand-up bass, The Stranger delivers top musicianship without sacrificing its punk roots.

 * Dusted Reviews - Darren Hanlon *
Probably the most touching track on the album is "He Misses You Too, You Know", a long-distance relationship lament that uses nothing more than Hanlon's voice and an acoustic guitar to detail a couple of lonely people on opposite ends of a phone line.
This won't sound entirely new if you've heard the aforementioned Australian bands before, especially the Lucksmiths, with whom Hanlon shares a penchant for strummy acoustic guitars and a love of everyday details in his lyrics.
Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, rightly hailed as a work of brilliant production, is ultimately a great album because at the core of all its wonderful sounds lie simple, sturdy songs with strong melodies and wonderful lyrics.

Bob Seger - Stranger In Town
He was, after all, practically a rock & roll archetype: an authentic hardworking, hard-traveling man, a gambler whose best-selling album was the one on which he reviewed his life, adding up the score and deciding whether or not he was too old to play anymore.
Without heeling to a concept, most of the songs touch on one form of isolation or another, but Seger's loners aren't exactly heroes.
Seger's success was an affirmation of rock & roll's essential durability, because his homegrown, audience-honed music was derivative in the best sense.

Rubber Soul is the best Beatles album and "I'm Looking Through You" is not just "in the top 20" as Segal puts it.
This is not why Revolver is better (which it is in its own right), but they are two albums where, listened to side by side, you hear the 20th Century changeover.
The best song on the best album is, obviously, "I'm Looking Through You," but I also recommend revisiting, for anyone who hasn't heard it in a while, "Girl," the song where they inhale incredibly loudly again and again.

All artists have one album that you should start off with if you want to learn a bit more about them, and this is the one to do so with Billy Joel, you will get to know his music style a bit better with The Stranger.
The only real problem with this and most other Billy Joel albums, is his lack of any great guitar parts in his songs.
This is Billy Joel's best written album, yet I sometimes wonder if you had to live on Long Island at the time of its release to get all of what he was writing about here.
