The Rite of Spring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thus The Rite of Spring has something in common with No. 33 of Bartok's 44 Violin Duets, "Song of the Harvest", which, "juxtaposes tonal and atonal interpretations of the same perfect-4th tetrachord" (p.
Stravinsky's own 1961 recording of the work for Columbia Records included liner notes by him, transcribed from an interview for which the audio still exists.
Stravinsky generates a wide variety of timbres from this ensemble, beginning the ballet with a very quiet and high bassoon solo, and ending with a frenzied dance played by the whole orchestra.

The Rite of Spring: Sacrificing Continuity
The Rite of Spring, both on the stage and in the concert hall, has continued to cause shockwaves among audiences, and the score has challenged the imagination of numerous twentieth-century composers.
The elders were seated in a circle watching the death dance of a young girl who was being sacrificed to propitiate the god of spring." The vision and the music came to Stravinsky at the same moment, and his hands immediately moved over the piano, playing a jittering motif.
It is no exaggeration to say that The Rite of Spring is one of the pillars of modern music, along with Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune by Debussy (1862-1918), and Pierrot Lunaire (1912) by Schoenberg (1874-1951).

The music of the "Rite of Spring" is an emotionally charged classical epic, juxtaposing moments of slow, beautiful anxiety and organic outbursts.

Second, his admix of classical and jazz transcended cliche and struck a chord in the listener that prevails today.
Despite a remarkable bevy of musicians—Milt Jackson, Paul Desmond, Chet Baker, Jack DeJohnette and Ron Carter—it is as if they were caught in musical indiscretions (or what we might call "compromising positions").

On the Rhythm of Igor Stravinsky's Great 'The Rite of Spring'
This is the music before the curtain rises, evoking the beginnings of Spring--and the melody is played high in the bassoon, in a register of that instrument which makes the sound seem both impinging and remote, both strained and quiet.
They are the power Stravinsky felt, the power he so beautifully uses in The Rite of Spring.
For all its hard-bitten quality, for all its fierceness, its upheaval, its sense of the world as being in tumult--I think the rhythm of this music has what Eli Siegel says we need for happiness: the sense of what we expect and what we don't expect at once.

I agree with today's Times review that reckons they did not all make the final note of part 1 together; and there was one shot of a string-player who seemed to be visibly mouthing the beats during a high-speed rest passage, not something you see every night with a band of that ilk.
