Topic: The Phantom of the Opera

 Opera - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
Traditional opera consists of two modes of singing: recitative, the dialogue and plot-driving passages often sung in a non-melodic style characteristic of opera, and aria, during which the movement of the plot often stops and the music and the singers focus on one topic using full voice.
The bel canto opera movement flourished in the early 19th century and is exemplified by the operas of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti.
Historically the most famous opera in the French grand opera tradition is probably Gounod's Faust, particularly in the United States where it was a favorite at the Met for the better half of the 20th century.

The title song, "The Phantom of the Opera", involves the two leading characters, the Phantom and Christine, singing of how the former is incessantly in the mind of the latter.
When I first heard the music from 'The Phantom of the Opera' 8yrs ago, almost instantly, a surge of emotion and inspiration tingled up my spine and I was in awe of the brilliance of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Strouse, and Richard Stilgoe.

 The Phantom of the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is a film with a different style of music than regular musicals and its a story that lacks dialogue.
While a musical like 2002's Chicago is a Broadway musical in which they sing and dance, The Phantom of the Opera has none of the latter.
His version of The Phantom of the Opera is a film that will have musical fans happy, but this film will likely anger die-hard opera music fans.

Movie Reviews: The Phantom of the Opera
The first step is to find a hit musical, and The Phantom of the Opera has been one of the biggest musicals for a long time now.
It had a creepy atmosphere, expensive costumes, and the man of a thousand faces in his most gruesome looking role; each successive Phantom of the Opera has lived up to the tradition, and it is here that the 2004 version most competes with its fellow members of the Phantom family.
As Andrew Lloyd Webber’s magnum opus, Phantom captured the opulence of opera with elaborate sets and costumes, yet it is not just about the sets as every scene, every song of the musical was intelligently placed in the right spot, the right way.

 The Phantom of the Opera
The lyrics are often as richly romantic and stylized as the story: “The Phantom of the Opera is there inside your mind,” he sings.
He is, of course, the Phantom (Gerard Butler), who mounts Christine on a horse and takes her down into the depths beneath the opera house, along a Cocteau-like corridor of (living) arms holding candelabras.
Usually a production as lavish as “The Phantom of the Opera” is buoyed by major stars, hoping to lure people in who might otherwise just wait for it on video or cable.

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Prior to 1986 when the musical phenomenon began, The Phantom of the Opera was a character that lived in the pantheon of Universal Famous Monsters and was celebrated for Lon Chaney’s performance and its triumph of grotesque makeup; after the musical the story was claimed by the same middle-aged crowds that regard
The Phantom turns up at the masque, but this is merely in a mask and red tunic, which fails almost entirely in dramatic effect, despite this film’s making a virtue of being an extravagant costume ball, especially when compared to Lon Chaney’s resplendent appearance as Edgar Allan Poe’s Red Death in the 1925 version.
There’s a cool scene with The Phantom trapping de Chagny in a hall of mirrors, but this is too brief to be effective, and another rather cursory one where de Chagny is trapped underwater beneath a grille – but clearly Schumacher is not at all interested in exploring the thriller aspect of the story.

Minnie Driver - Phantom of the Opera
Ironically, in Phantom of the Opera, Driver, who has just released her first album, is the only cast member who did not do her own singing, which she understood but still feels is a bit weird.
Looking elegant in a Hew York hotel room, Minnie Driver, who gives a scene-stealing performance in Phantom of the Opera, is usually coy about her personal life, but happily admits to "going out with an Australian.
Driver also has a song in the movie over its closing credits [and nominated for a Golden Globe no less] and with her album doing well, one wonders whether she will be focusing more on her music and slowly give up her acting.

The cinematic version of the Phantom of the Opera brings a new song, “Learn to be Lonely”, to the original soundtrack.
And when Raoul and the Phantom have their duel at the graveyard, there’s the continuity of Raoul jumping on the horse and going from the opera house to the cemetary.
At two and a half hours, Schumacher’s direction of the Phantom of the Opera bears pretty close resemblance to the stage version.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantome de l'Opera by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it.

The Phantom of the Opera Reviewed
A film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera has been thrown around for years, and now it is here, just like it says, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.
It is no Chicago for the reason that Phantom is more of a traditional musical and will not likely appeal to many non musical fans or make any converts.
It is established that the Phantom is a magician, but all the magic is taken out of his skills.

Review: Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Truth be told, I am not fond of Lloyd Webber's style of music, and The Phantom of the Opera suffers from a multitude of problems, not the least of which are poor writing and an uneasy marriage between a gothic setting and big-production musical numbers.
I have never been a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's phenomenally popular stage musical version of The Phantom of the Opera, so it will probably come as no surprise that the film adaptation, which is faithful to its inspiration, left me feeling underwhelmed.
He offers one tremendous visual image, when the chandelier is raised and the Opera House returns to its splendor of 1870 (the movie is bookended with unnecessary scenes in the 1910s).

The Phantom of the Opera - Movie Review (Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera)
As for the music of Phantom of the Opera..
I saw the phantom of the opera when i was six and when i watched the trailer for the first time iburst into to tears because my big brother who died 5 yrs ago was with me so the film and the theatre touched me so deep.
Phantom of the Opera is a classic because it is an outstanding show with brilliant singing, and acting.

There was a live band, and the man who I had met at the door ordered them to play a Spanish song of some sort.
I parked the car and went into the hospital pharmacy, where there was a large room, and there were shelves of medicine and in the middle were chairs for people to wait for their prescriptions to be filled.
I had a phantom pin on my jacket so I held up my jacket, pointed to the button and yelled, "Did you think that he had left you for good?!" Monsieur Firmin yelled "Damn, not here, not now!" and I started laughing but it didn't sound like my laughter, it sounded like Erik's maniacal laughter.

 The Phantom of the Opera
But from my point of view as a 14 year old girl, I believe that the Phantom of the Opera is one of the best movies of 2005.
Past the Point of No Return would have to be my fave, but Phantom of the Opera is a close second.
Based on the hit musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the tale tells the story of a disfigured musical genius that haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, waging a reign of terror over its occupants.

Amazon.com: movie info: The Phantom of the Opera
Although it's not as bold as Oscar darling Chicago, The Phantom of the Opera continues the resuscitation of the movie musical with a faithful adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's blockbuster stage musical.
Taken as a film version however, this PHANTOM stands the test of time, not only as a wonderful musical film, but as one of the more faithful versions of Gaston Laroux's romance/horror novel.
Emmy Rossum glows in a breakout role as opera ingénue Christine Daae, and if phantom Gerard Butler isn't Rossum's match vocally, he does convey menace and sensuality in such numbers as "The Music of the Night." The most experienced musical theater veteran in the cast, romantic lead Patrick Wilson, sings sweetly but seems wooden.
