Backed by the success of it's teenage anthems "Self Esteem" and "Come Out And Play", the album achieved platinum status, which was unheard of for a independent-label punk album.
Suddenly, punk music was the in genre, with its fanbase growing by the thousands and the number of bands emerging from those fans uncountable.
When The Offspring first emerged with their 1994 release Smash, they were widely criticized as punk-wannabe's who had no place in either the punk or pop worlds.

With buddhist punk-guru producer Thom Wilson and a new lineup, the band recorded the album The Offspring.
The Offspring recruited Josh Freese to record the drums for Splinter and later announced that Atom Willard would be the official replacement for Ron Welty, however his name remained absent from the album credits.

The Offspring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although their first album, The Offspring, was very similar to late 1980s punk, the next album, Ignition, saw them move away from more traditional punk, heading into the punk of the mid-1990s with songs like "Dirty Magic".
The Offspring appeared as an unnamed punk band in the 1999 horror-comedy, where Dexter Holland was scalped by the titular possessed hand.
Although Smash was the album that originally brought The Offspring into commercial success and wide recognition, it was the release of "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" from the 1998 album Americana which established the band as a regular feature on MTV and established The Offspring as a regular chart presence.

 VH1.com : The Offspring : Biography
The Offspring recorded a version of the Damned's "Smash It Up" for the Batman Forever soundtrack in the summer of that year; it kept the band on the charts as they worked on their third album.
The Offspring's metal-inflected punk became a popular sensation in 1994, selling over four million albums on an independent record label.
Expectation for the record was high and it did receive good reviews, but Ixnay on the Hombre failed to become a crossover hit on the level of Smash, and the group also lost a significant portion of their hardcore punk audience due to the album's major-label status.

The Offspring have always been my favorite band (Since i was 6 years old), and this album is great, but it doesn't stand up to the other albums.
The Offspring were the originators of that metal punk sound and were cast out from a lot of different punk groups for being "too different".

Offspring may claim to be punk, but their sound on Smash is something of a cross between punk, pop, and rock.
It’s not for hard core punk fans, rather this Offspring album should prove appealing to rock fans who have a occasional craving for something a bit different and a bit punk.
I suppose each of the tracks is a social commentary, but what I got out of the songs was that the band was trying to be funny and succeeding.

The Offspring's second album for Epitaph did the impossible: it landed in the Top Five, unheard of for independent records.

Amazon.com: The Offspring: Music: The Offspring
Until Americana, Offspring had intelligent lyrics and good instrumentals (especially compared to many other punk bands who use "3-chord" music as an excuse to not use their guitars or bass to it's possibilities), and their original self-titled album (released in 1989), "The Offspring," is no different.
This is the reason a lot of their songs are graphic, and maybe a little disturbing but seriously this isn't a bad listen most of you people should actually give it a try instead of just listening to one song adn deciding you don't like it.
Of their 7 albums, this is the least polished, least poppy, and least popular, but its raw punk energy, poetic lyrics, and catchy songwriting make up for all that.

WHEN THE OFFSPRING first broke through on the radio with their 1995 "S.M.A.S.H." hit "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)" (from the LP), the band seemed like a natural one-hit wonder.
The song also bears the ever-popular chorus "Fuck you!" and with a sentiment like that, the Offspring may have no trouble keeping their place as one of the decade's more popular nuevo punk bands.
The Offspring sound more and more like an updated (and better-produced) version of the Dead Kennedys, and the DKS--an early San Francisco punk-rock band best known for its mouthy lead singer/mayoral candidate Jello Biafra--have proved awfully durable over the years.

In this case, because we recorded a couple of covers, the songs are written and the lyrics are written, so Dexter didn't have to lock himself in the toilet for a couple of hours and come up with the last verse or something.

From a small unknown 80's punk band to one of the most well-known musicians around the world, The Offspring have often been credited to bringing punk music out into the light.
However, The Offspring don't limit themselves to punk; instead, they incorporate various styles of music into their songs from grunge to hard rock while even sampling sounds from the Middle East.

Recorded in half the time it took them to produce their last album, Ixnay on the Hombre, in ’97 (18 months instead of 36), the new CD is pure Offspring: melodic punk, fast driven songs with addictive hook lines, and “meant to be played loud,” as instructed by Noodles.
Since the band’s first album, Ignition, in ’92, the Offspring have climbed steadily in fanbase and industry recognition.
Their ’94 release appropriately titled Smash sold more than 11 million copies world wide, a success previously unheard of for a band signed with an indie label.

They may be twice the age of most of the other bands at this year's Warped Tour, but as this disc proves, they can transcend cookie cutter punk, when they want to.
Perhaps a little too safely, as recent albums have shown the band coasting, displaying little of the songwriting skill of their compadres from up the coast.

Just days after ordering punk rockers the Offspring to stop selling illegal Napster-logo souvenirs on the band's Website--thereby putting Napster in the sticky position of protecting its own intellectual property--the embattled Net music site said today everything is a-okay.
Good thing, too, considering the Offspring's little copyright experiment already had Napster's opposition screaming words like "hypocrisy" and "irony." The band has publicly supported Napster, but it began selling bootlegged company T-shirts, hats and bumper stickers last week on its official site, just to see how enlightened the company really is.
But after a weekend of deliberating, the company says they've arranged a deal with the Offspring to sell the souvenirs and "work together to offer a more complete line of Napster products.
