The Moonglows: The Best of the Moonglows (20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection) - PopMatters Music Review
Cushioned by the sweet -- and non-confrontational -- sound of the Moonglows' singing, that is, the jumpy rhythms of the electric guitar, the saxophone, and the upright bass now began to penetrate the once resistant, increasingly receptive ears of thousands, tempering and preparing them for the harder rocking music which materialized a few years later.
Using their voices to simulate musical instruments -- like the violin, the cello, and winds -- doo-wop singers had quickly become popular with record producers, who realized that a full, nearly symphonic sound created with human voices eliminated the need for using -- and spending money -- on backup players.
But though 'easy listening' ballads dominate the Moonglows' songbook, a handful of tracks actually almost swagger and strut.

The Moonglows first gained notice in 1952 after disc jockey Alan Freed, whose "Moondog Rock 'n' Roll Party" program on Cleveland's WJW was a powerful influence, renamed the group and created the Champagne label for them.
Their first session for the label in 1954 resulted in their biggest hit, a lush, romantic rendition of "Sincerely," frequently cited as the definitive example of "blow harmony," a sensuous elongation of vowel sounds that became a Moonglows' trademark.
