The Last Waltz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Last Waltz is the name of The Band's final concert, the Martin Scorsese documentary film about the concert, and the album of the concert.
In 2002, an edition of the concert was released on a 4-CD box set and a sonically enhanced DVD-Audio edition.
The officially released LPs were marked by heavy overdubbing and resequencing; collectors have circulated an original line recording of the concert as a more accurate document of the event.

The Last Waltz DVD Review at The Z Review UK DVD reviews
The Last Waltz is a fine-looking, colour corrected film transfer approved by director Martin Scorsese with a new digital 5.1 surround audio mix supervised by producer Robbie Robertson, better known as the Band's chief songwriter and guitarist.
The film is an affectionate though hard-edged two-hour compression of that evening, the last time these musicians put their songs together for a concert performance.
The Last Waltz is undoubtedly the greatest and most authentic rock concert film ever made.

The Last Waltz :: Education by Design Store
This 4-CD box set has the whole concert for the first time in its entirety plus some extra songs that didn't make it to either the original album or film and was painstakingly remastered and produced by Band guitarist Robbie Robertson.
The Band's legendary concert film and off-shoot triple live album The Last Waltz was originally released in April of 1978.
When "The Last Waltz" was released as an album of film it was a definite success, and the movie has been called the greatest rock film ever made.

The Band's The Last Waltz album-remastering the Band's farewell concert
Acclaimed by many as the greatest rock concert film ever made, The Last Waltz — director Martin Scorsese's riveting depiction of the Thanksgiving 1976 farewell concert by The Band and a gaggle of their musician friends — was a natural candidate to make the jump to multichannel formats.
The Band's The Last Waltz album-remastering the Band's farewell concert
Gellert joined The Last Waltz project after the original tapes — including five hours' worth of 24-track multitracks from the concert, plus the “Last Waltz Suite” and other tapes recorded on a Hollywood soundstage after the event — had been transferred to 48-track digital format.

 DVDFILE.COM: The Last Waltz review
The Last Waltz is very highly recommended and a must-buy for anyone who loves popular music, or wants to be reminded what rock sounded like before Creed and Blink-182 ruled the airwaves.
The songs showcased in The Last Waltz represent an amazing contradiction: the star power on display was unbelievable, yet the performers were humble and unpretentious.
And looking back on it, The Last Waltz was not only a eulogy for a great musical act.

Last Waltz Boxed Set - Rhino Press Release #105
Their roots-inspired, earthy approach steered music away from the "flower power" sound; The Last Waltz marked the end of an era (as punk was on the rise), and their music has influenced many great rock artists, including The Beatles, Clapton, Counting Crows, Train, and Travis, to name just a few.
The special edition DVD bonus material includes the "Revisiting The Last Waltz" featurette; Robertson and Scorsese discuss their own experiences in attempting to accurately capture the historical live music event on film, including the necessity of expanding their respective music and film mentalities in order to work together creatively.
Newly remixed by Robertson from the original multitrack masters of pre-concert, concert, and post-concert material, The Last Waltz boxed set is the most complete audio restoration ever available of this landmark event.

 TroyRutter.com - Music : The Last Waltz
I had heard the entire Last Waltz concert as an unmixed bootleg recording before, so I was excited when I heard it would be released by Rhino as a commercially-mixed 4-CD set.
The sound of this new box is outstanding and although I have not compared one to one with the older 2CD version I suspect I won't be playing it much any more.
The original album was great and still is, but this box set blows me away.

The box set, which was remixed by Band songwriter/guitarist Robbie Robertson, includes the thirty songs from the original soundtrack, as well as twenty-four unreleased performances, including the Band's rehearsals with Van Morrison and Dr. John.
The Band's farewell concert, The Last Waltz, will be released as a four-CD box set on April 16th, to coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the landmark concert and subsequent Martin Scorsese-directed film.
Two full-length running commentaries are also on the DVD: Robertson and Scorsese provide a shot-by-shot audio commentary on the film, and the other surviving Band members, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm, discuss the songs and the concert.

Amazon.co.uk: DVD: The Last Waltz [1978]
The Last Waltz was the musical climax of the 60's & 70's, marking the end of a period of innocence, discovery and invention.
The concert is like one big party with some of the best rock music their is ever written and the comments from Scorcese,Robbie Robertson and some of the other musicians really gives you a great insight into their perfomance and what it was like, in their case,to be rockstars on the road.
Scorsese's direction and documenting of one of the last great gatherings of the most influential, down-right talented and successful popular music artists ever, not only witnessed the passing of The Band, but of an era.

USATODAY.com - 'The Last Waltz' takes one more spin on CD, DVD
The Last Waltz entailed an unprecedented use of cumbersome 35mm film, a 300-page script, a live audience, no opportunity for retakes, minimal rehearsal (the title song was penned the day before the concert) and a huge celebrity cast.
The experience of The Last Waltz has been painstakingly replicated in a four-CD box ($60, Rhino) packed with remixed tracks and previously unreleased performances, and a special-edition DVD ($25, MGM Entertainment) featuring storyboards, artwork, the movie trailer, TV ads, recent interviews, two full-length audio commentaries and never-before-seen footage.
Scorsese says The Last Waltz "shows the extraordinary richness of the tapestry of American music.

LAST NOTES / Box set captures the passionate final performances of jazz pianist Bill Evans
These are not the same performances on ``Consecration,'' another eight-CD box set of live Keystone recordings made the same week and released in Japan by Alfa Records in 1989.
The beauty and urgency of those performances are captured on Evans' final recordings, ``The Last Waltz'' ($125), a splendid eight-CD box set issued last week on Milestone, one of Berkeley-based Fantasy's labels.
A few of those recordings were put out in Europe by the Timeless label until the Evans estate took legal action to stop their unauthorized release.

The DVD Journal Reviews : The Last Waltz: Special Edition
More than a simple concert film, The Last Waltz tells a story of the end of a band, the end of a musical era, and the wide range of musical influences that created 70's rock-and-roll.
He made Robertson give him lyric sheets for all the songs, then created storyboards and a 300-page "shooting script" for the concert, listening to the music with an eye toward who should be on camera at what point, what colors should be used, when to use tracking shots, two-shots and close-ups.
There were subsequent albums supposedly by The Band, but Robbie Robertson &; chief songwriter and keeper of The Band's flame — never took part.

Encyclopedia article on The Band [EncycloZine]
The best of their later albums is the live recording Rock of Ages (1972), recorded at a New Year's Eve 1971/1972 concert and featuring the line-up, bolstered by the addition of a horn section, in exuberant form.
The album was probably The Band's last classic work, with subsequent records being increasingly disappointing for most fans, although each included a number of classic songs (e.g "It Makes No Difference") that rank with the best of their work.
The tour following their second album was the first with The Band as headline act, and the resulting anxiety, especially felt by Robertson who undertook hypnosis to combat it, was an influence on their next work, the self-explanatory Stage Fright (1970), which was engineered by whiz-kid musician-engineer-producer Todd Rundgren.

 Barnes & Noble.com - The Last Waltz -- Martin Scorsese - DVD - Wide Screen / Stereo
Restored and sonically enhanced for its 25th anniversary and DVD debut, The Last Waltz is a searing musical party with soaring ambitions that rarely disappoints.
Martin Scorsese's documentary of the 1976 final performance of the legendary Sixties rock group The Band is at once a show featuring some of the greatest rock performers of their generation and a bittersweet look back at an era that was just beginning to fade.
Whether you subscribe to notion that The Last Waltz really was the last waltz -- a matches-flaming final encore for the American rock of the ‘60s -- or a farewell concert overfreighted by some fans with cultural import, there's no escaping its sheer brilliance as a film.

"The Last Waltz" is Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary of the final concert given by The Band, whose 16-year career was coming to an end.
I suppose that the documentary is also capturing the begining of the end of the kind of presence that this kind of classic rock had in the music industry as the 70's went into the 80's, as well.
Cocks and Marcus bring insight about the project and the music, while the artists talk about what it was like to play at this classic concert.

CANOE -- JAM! Music - Artists - The Band Album Review: THE LAST WALTZ
The main draw, of course, is the music: The 30 cuts from the original album, augmented by 24 previously unreleased concert recordings, rehearsal numbers and studio outtakes.
What's even more amazing, however, is the realization that The Band edited those gems out of their own farewell album.
In addition to studio tracks that were recorded for the film, the fourth CD contains five rehearsal recordings (including Van Morrison's Caravan and Tura Lura Lural, along with Dr. John's Such a Night), and three studio outtakes that offer a peek into Robertson's musical sketchbook.

SH Forums - The Last Waltz - THE CD
I listened to some of this set last night and am happy with the sound.
Sometimes, in a case like the Ray Charles Atlantic box set, he makes a goof or two, and others, like the Everly Brothers Cadence recordings, it's a frustrating search that doesn't reach complete fruition (some songs on the 20 Cadence Classics used copies; it wasn't until later that Inglot finally found all the right tapes).
As an interesting aside, Robertson in his notes mentions that he likes the "warmth and texture" of LPs, but also liked the fact that he could put out 4 CDs with twice the material of the old 3 LP set.

 Discography: The Last Waltz
Martin Scorsese's landmark documentary of the all-star concert (previously available only on video) is to be released as a special-edition DVD on May 7, 2002, with storyboards, artwork, the movie trailer, TV ads, new interviews with Scorsese and Robbie Robertson, and never-before-seen footage of The Band with Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and others.
This concert stands out as one of the best musical gatherings in a great while and should be listened to or watched, many times.
In addition to the 2-CD version of the concert (described above), Rhino Records has released a four-CD box set on April 16, 2002, which features remixed tracks and unreleased material, including two jams and performances by Emmylou Harris, Van Morrison and Muddy Waters.

eye - Murder by the numbers - 04.18.02
The rustic terrain staked out by these four Canadians and one American on classic albums like 1968's Music From Big Pink and 1969's The Band has been fertile ground lately, both for the recent wave of alt-country acts and the bluegrass veterans celebrated on O Brother, Where Art Thou's blockbuster soundtrack.
Since its release in 1978, Martin Scorsese's documentary of the Band's star-studded "farewell" show in 1976 -- it reformed in the '80s, minus guitarist Robbie Robertson -- has been widely imitated by other concert films.
Some (Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Van Morrison and a surprisingly vigorous Bob Dylan) are terrific while others (Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton) are less so.

Review - THE BAND: The Last Waltz
The original three LP box set of The Band's final concert on Thanksgiving Day, 1978, was a monumental release, both in terms of its physical scope (three LP sets were much rarer than 4 CD sets are today) and in terms of its musical range.
Now, under the watchful eye of Robbie Robertson, the rest of the material recorded that night has been restored in a 4 CD release that provides 24 tracks that were left off the original.
With the help of master promoter Bill Graham, The Band filled the stage of San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom with one of the most impressive lineups in rock history.
