 The Last Waltz
The entire undubbed concert was released as a 4 CD bootleg set in 1995.
The Last Waltz teeters between these two schools of thought, wanting to celebrate the end while blithely ignoring that musicians make music for a living -- and that's what keeps the music from truly captivating, from being essential, even if this set is perfectly assembled.
The original 30-track 3-LP box was also re-released in February 2003 by Rhino Handmade, as a limited-edition set (1500 copies) pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and featuring the new Robbie Robertson mixes included on Rhino's four-CD boxed set released in 2002.

It was the first rock concert shot on 35mm film and the first recorded using a 24-track system, and It's a hell of a beautiful film.
Forget the fact that the collection of rock talent on stage during this concert has perhaps never been equaled since, or that the performances of songs like "The Weight" by the Band or "Helpless" by Neil Young are pretty much as definitive as you're going to get.

The Last Waltz is director Martin Scorsese’s (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) film of The Band’s final concert, held at San Francisco’s Winterland concert hall in 1976.
With heavy-weight talents such as Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Dylan himself (to name a few) appearing on-stage, The Last Waltz is not just a must-see for followers of The Band, but for all lovers of music from the era.
As a result, The Last Waltz has been consistently praised as an example of how concert movies should be made.

At the time "The Last Waltz" was created, the rock film was still a rarity, despite the magisterial "Woodstock" and the shockingly fun mid-1960s Beatles outings.
That film aside, however, "The Last Waltz," as the pristine DVD version attests, is the single best movie about rock 'n' roll and only rock 'n' roll ever made.
And the music they made -- today you'd call it Americana, or alternative country -- is as unfashionable a genre as you can imagine, the success of the yuppie coffee-table CD that is the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack notwithstanding.

Interspersed with the songs are interviews with members of the Band that show their passion for the music and their grappling with fame.
Throughout the interviews, there’s a recurring sense of nostalgia among the band members for something lost as the Band grew famous, which, combined with their still-evident love of music, clearly lends the film a wistful tone, and the sense of one final hurrah captured.
And what a film it is: true, The Last Waltz’s star-studded lineup of the Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, and others makes this a record of some kind of magic nexus of great musicians, but Scorsese also manages to make this a true film, rather than just concert footage spliced together.

When the decision was made in 1976 to bring The Band to a close (though it has continued to exist in various forms since that time), it was decided to play their final gig at Bill Graham's Winterland in San Francisco, where they had performed their first show as The Band in 1969.
Their sound is a widely varying mix of influences and is clearly marked with its roots in the 1960s and 1970s, so The Band is not going to be universally liked.
Although Martin Scorsese briefly considered shooting The Last Waltz as simply an archival film in 16mm, he wisely made the move to 35mm and thus we have a beautiful concert film brought to disc in anamorphic video.

The Last Waltz was the 1978 soundtrack to the film of the same name, documenting the "farewell" concert of Canadian-American rockers The Band, which took place at Bill Graham's Winterland Arena on Thanksgiving Day, 1976.
The soundtrack, featuring numerous other musicians whom the Band had either played with or influenced throughout their career, was a sampling of the full concert set occupying the first five sides of the 3-LP set, and "The Last Waltz Suite", five new songs and a new version of "The Weight", occupying the sixth side.
