Green River were formed in Seattle in 1984, taking their name from the area's notorious, then-recent serial killer (who wasn't brought to justice until around two decades later).
Green River specialized in a dirty, sludgy, gleefully ugly hybrid of punk, heavy metal, and bluesy hard rock, drawing from bands like the Stooges and Aerosmith in addition to the hardcore punk outfits where many of the members first cut their teeth.
Green River started playing local clubs, and in 1985 they recorded two tracks for the compilation album Deep Six, the inaugural release on local indie C/Z Records (it also featured early tracks by Soundgarden, the Melvins, Malfunkshun, and Skin Yard).

More than any other single band, Seattle's Green River (named after a local serial killer) was responsible for the rise of long-haired dudes in Sub Pop T-shirts standing around in clubs, shaking their manes like so many lost Status Quo guitarists.
Green River is less formalist and fuzz-specific than Mudhoney, but it's easy to discern the latter's roots on this earlier vinyl scuzz.
Rehab Doll (the CD and cassette of which add Dry as a Bone) is the best example of Green River's neck-twitching meta-bunk, and even includes a few guest moans by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.

 Green River Album Reviews
The band is named after the Green River Killer, and Arm certainly sounds unhinged at times (priceless lyric: "when I see you with that bastard hand in hand, well I just want to cut off your Goddamn wrist"), while the dirty guitars churn or grind behind him as the rhythm section thrashes about.
Still, theirs is quite a grungy little song, and Green River deserves respect for being forerunners of a sound that would soon shake rock n' roll to its very core (courtesy of St. Kurt).
Actually, Green River was comprised of future Mudhoney (Mark Arm, and, briefly, Steve Turner) and Pearl Jam (Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard) members, making Kurt Cobain's snide remarks about Pearl Jam's "corporate ambitions" all the more laughable given their pedigree.

What matters is that the music holds up extremely well, and this generous 2-for-1 set is all the Green River you really need (an earlier EP, Come On Down, is solid enough but of a lesser quality overall).
