The Great Escape (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Great Escape is the fourth album by Blur.
The Great Escape received glowing reviews and was a big seller in its initial release, reaching #1 in the United Kingdom album chart and was their first to crack the US charts (even if at a lowly # 150).
Nonetheless, the album continues the run of inventive hit singles: "Country House" (their first #1 single, which infamously beat out Oasis' "Roll With It"), "The Universal", "Stereotypes" and "Charmless Man".

The album was a breakthrough for the band, especially in their home country, scoring hits with singles such as "Girls and Boys", and "Parklife" which seems to have been influenced by The Small Faces' "Lazy Sunday".
This album sparked the sudden popularity of Britpop, which reached its height for Blur with the album The Great Escape in (1995).
The album resulting from the sessions, Think Tank, was released in May 2003 to mostly favourable reviews and was nominated for Best British Album at the 2004 Brit awards.

 Amazon.co.uk: The Great Escape: Music
It wasn't until the second album Modern Life is Rubbish that the iconic Blur sound began to immerge, with the band taking the influence of 60's acts like The Kinks and The Beatles and applying it to the indie-ethos of 80's bands like The Smiths, Felt and The Wedding Present.
Horrifyingly, The Great Escape is almost a concept album.
Because of this, the album can be enjoyed as both a conceptual piece (with Blur looking at certain themes synonymous with the rat race and the British way of life), or as a collection of fine pop songs (the singles, particularly The Universal, still sound great).

 Varese Sarabande Product Details
And as wonderful as his soundtrack album recording was, and as triumphant as it was to hear the RSNO invest the music with new life and have it captured with contemporary recording technology, this third CD is most definitely the charm.
The two new albums would be recorded as part of a 75th birthday celebration for Elmer during which he would also conduct the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in a concert of selections from many of his film scores.
For many of the 40 years since the recording of that album took place it has been believed that the tapes of the film recording of the score had been lost to time.

Despite the grim lyrics, "The Great Escape" is a very listenable and entertaining album.
The lyric is simpler than anything else on the album, and the characters seems even more desolate because their isolation is communal.
"The Great Escape" released at the height of the Blur vs. Oasis showdown in the fall of 1995 (coinciding with the release of "Morning Glory"), doesn't expand much on the sonic experimentation of it's brilliant predecessor "Parklife." Instead, Blur seem to have put more focus on craft, resulting in an album of "songs".

Welcome to MVC.co.uk The Great Escape
This is one of those rare albums that you can listen to all the way through.
Highlight of the album for me is the closing 'Yoku & Hiro' as it is quite a sad oriental tinged ballad.
A confused band going through a very confused period have produced an album which is only worthy in the history of Blur as it does `kind-of` allow you to understand just what transitions they have been through in order to arrive at the truly grundbreaking `13`.

This could be one of the greatest albums ever released.
I've owned this album for as many years as it's been available, and I've never gone very long without playing it.
"Girls and Boys" is one of the most catchy pop songs of all time and "End of a century" is a very meaningful and likeable song but "Parklife" is awful, especially as its the main track on the album.

 Bernstein: The Great Escape
The original vinyl album was a re-recording done at the time of the film with a vastly reduced orchestra; that recording was first issued on CD by Intrada, later by Rykodisc (who generously added dialogue snippets - every film music fan's dream come true) and finally, in mid-2004, by Varese Sarabande.
Tragically, the legendary composer of this wonderful music died when this, one of his most classic works, was finally released in all its glory, so it ends up being a glorious tribute to his matchless gifts.
Great, dynamic action music in Bernstein's unmistakable style; soaring emotion; classic suspense; a lovely, moving finale.

2/2/05: CD Review The Great Escape
Sound quality on the album is fantastic, as is evident right from the start, when Bernstein's classic march kicks things off in the "Main Title." The score is surprisingly varied when listened to as a whole -- it's not just a bunch of variations on the march.
All previous LP and CD incarnations had been of a studio re-recording with an orchestra half the size as the one heard here, and it's a revelation to hear it now, in it's entirety, as it was meant to be heard.
Naturally, Bernstein provided a fair deal of suspense for the allied P.O.W.'s plans for escape, but tracks like "The Scrounger/Blythe" feature warm music for the bonding between the prisoners; it's not all just triumph and heroics.

 The Great KAT GUITAR SHREDDER
The Great Kat is a phenom in the music world bringing shredding violin with unbelievably extreme ripping guitar playing.
"The Great Kat's chops are impressive – the speed with which she spits out scales on both electric guitar and violin is astounding, especially when accompanied, as it is on the DVD’s six videos, by her snarling, wild-eyed metal posturing and head-banging." -
Donning costumes inspired in equal measure by metal, S and M fashion, and WWF wrestling, she wields both the guitar and violin like weapons, and delivers masterful rock renditions of cherished classical songs.

Blur : The Great Escape - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Where Blur's breakthrough album was a celebration of the working class, drawing on British pop from the '60s and reaching through the '80s, The Great Escape concentrates on the suburbs, featuring a cast of characters all trying to cope with the numbing pressures of modern life.
However, none of this makes The Great Escape a burden or a difficult album.
The music bristles with invention throughout, as Blur delves deeper into experimentation with synthesizers, horns, and strings; guitarist Graham Coxon twists out unusual chords and lead lines, and Damon Albarn spits out unexpected lyrical couplets filled with wit and venomous intelligence in each song.

Even quieter tracks such as Blythe echo its syncopation if not its actual melody, but most of the tracks make at least some easily recognisable reference to the march.
As with other early Ryko re-releases, this has a few dialogue cues but adds no new music over the original album release.
Don't feel that I'm denigrating Bernstein's effort by saying it's not one of his best, it is a fantastic score, but no matter how hard he tries, Bernstein can't really eclipse that theme, but still an essential purchase for any film music fan.
