The Fall (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fall's song "Hip Priest" (1982) was used as the soundtrack to the climax of the 1991 film version of Silence of the Lambs.
The Fall's sound has generally remained constant from the clanking, almost rockabilly guitars of their early work (Smith has confessed to a liking for the music of Johnny Cash) to the amphetamine-rush of the more recent electronic music backing tracks.
In January 2005, The Fall (described as "one of the most enigmatic, idiosyncratic and chaotic garage bands of the last 30 years") were the subject of a BBC 4 TV documentary, The Fall: The Wonderful and Frightening World of Mark E Smith.

The new lineup recorded the band's first full-length album, Live at the Witch Trials, which was released in 1979.
The Fall wrote the music and libretto for the ballet and performed the work several times during late 1984 and early 1985; an album of the music eventually appeared in 1988.
Out of all the late-'70s punk and post-punk bands, none were longer-lived or were more prolific than the Fall.

Prindle Record Reviews - The Fall
Not the best Fall album I've listened to, but I was never that keen on techno dance music.
The band are as tight as Kula Shaker are slack and a perfect antidote to all the tenth-rate derivative wank that passes for "alternative music" anytime.
This is the band at their most epic.

The Fall: Totally Wired: The Rough Trade Anthology: Pitchfork Review
The Fall's three-year tenure at Rough Trade Records is the stuff of legend, full of rancorous label/band fighting (Smith later said he'd rather retire than record for them again), furious live shows, and music that would forever alter the course of independent music.
The band members echo his chorus, but it's during the verses that Smith drops the song's best lines: "You don't have to be weird...
The song is as indicative of The Fall's signature sound as any other, but it's also perhaps one of their most accessible.

The output of the band continues to this day with the band working on an album set for release in 2003, which will be yet another fine release from a band who have achieved fame without compromise, and whose artistic integrity remains intact 25 years after their formation.
Central to their sound has always been the vocal and lyrical style of band leader Mark E. Smith, which has characterised over 25 albums and 27 different line-ups of the group.
The band experimented with a two-drummer line-up for the 1982 album "Hex Enduction Hour", and more major changes came in 1983 with the addition of guitarist (and Smith's girlfriend) Brix.

Equally revered is the lengthy "Hip Priest", one of three tracks from the Iceland sessions that made the album.
Beginning with a tiptoeing drum beat, Smith croons the memorable hook in an affected falsetto, "He, is, not," and then concludes in a dead serious tone, "appreciated", as a subtle guitar lick echoes the menace in Smith's voice.

The Fall are the longest lasting UK punk band still existing, this is arguably their best effort and at the time of its release stuck out far from the madding crowd.
If you're new to the Fall, this is definitely the place to start, as some of their earlier 1980s material and later 1990s stuff can be a bit 'difficult', and their later 1980s albums never quite captured the real Fall sound as did Bend Sinister.
