The Buggles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Buggles shot to fame with their first single released in late 1979 becoming the 444th number one in the UK charts.
The Buggles were a pop/rock band formed in 1977 consisting of Geoff Downes (Percussion, Keyboards) and Trevor Horn (Bass guitar, Guitar, Percussion, Vocals), who had re-teamed after the earlier incarnation Camera Club had also included Bruce Wooley, Thomas Dolby and Hans Zimmer (Academy Award-winning film composer).
The band's sound was characterized by a deliberately synthetic quality, in keeping with the technological subject matter of their songs.

The Buggles - The Age of Plastic
There was a recurring theme in the music of the Buggles and that was the fear that technology was about to overtake the soul of pop music.
And in lyrics, as in music, the Buggles were very nostalgic.
Despite the Buggles being somewhat of a flash in the pan, most of the members have had continued success in the world of pop music, going on to be involved with other bands such as Yes, Asia (I fail to see how someone opposed to soulless technological music could join Asia), and doing film soundtracks.

 Not Verbose: Those Ironic Buggles
Even more so when the Buggles album that gave us the song, a cult record entitled ‘The Age of Plastic’, echoed the then commonplace fear that modern technology was about to cake the authenticity of pop music with a veneer of manufactured plasticity.
It will forever be a landmark in modern pop music because it was the first ever song played on MTV.
While pop songs are merely songs, POP SONGS, on the other hand, alter popular culture and define its history.

The Buggles - The Age of Plastic Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, ...
The Buggles were Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes, two legendary studio noodlers and video pioneers of the ‘70s and ‘80s, who went on to join Yes for one album and later form Asia.
The Buggles did not invent space rock, nor did they ever record an album like this again, though their second and final release (1982’s “Adventures in Modern Recording”) holds its own.
In this age of renewed interest in bringing elements of ambience, science fiction and space age vision into rock and roll, one might expect a rediscovery of the music that first tread upon those tracks.

The opening title song is recognizably 'Buggles', one of the few songs here that is, actually.
But, having said all of that, this album at least deserves to be in print!

Fans of the band Yes may also chime in with the fact that both of the two Buggles went on to join that band and produce their albums.
I admit I have little certainty as to what it's actually about - as with most of the Buggles' lyrics, there are vague themes in play dealing with technology, love, and nostalgia, but the particular plot is uncertain.
It was also, not incidentally, the first song ever broadcast on MTV, which is pretty much the main reason the band shows up in the history books at all - they make for a good trivia question answer.

As the answer to the trivia question "What was the first act ever played on MTV?," the Buggles assured their place in pop music history.
Their first single, "Video Killed the Radio Star," hit number one in the U.K. in late 1979; when MTV went on the air in 1981, the prophetically-titled record's video was the first ever broadcast on the fledgling cable network.
After Yes' break-up, Downes signed on with Asia, while Horn formed ZTT Records and produced hits for the likes of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and ABC.
