The Basement Tapes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Basement Tapes peaked at #7 in 1975 on Billboard's (North America) Pop Albums chart and reached #8 in the UK.
The Basement Tapes are a series of recordings by North American folk-rockers Bob Dylan and The Band, recorded in mid-1967.
The recordings were first heard on a bootleg called The Great White Wonder in 1968 (see 1968 in music) and were finally released (as The Basement Tapes, as they had become colloquially known) on June 26, 1975 (see 1975 in music).

 THE BASEMENT TAPES - 1975
Eventually gaining an official release eight years later (with several delightful songs from a later Band session added), THE BASEMENT TAPES was a ragbag collection of alternately playful and serious acoustic songs that drew on a deep well of American tradition for their inspiration.
The songs were recorded live on a home tape recorder in the basement of a house called Big Pink, in West Saugerties, New York.
Cut live on a home tape recorder, with from one to three mikes, all of the tracks have been remastered; highlights have been brought out, tones sharpened, tape hiss removed, and so on.

But for the official album the record company took the original stereo tapes, collapsed them into mono, overdubbed new parts (including drums which are largely excluded on the original performances), and filled out much of the album not with basement tapes but with in-studio demos recorded by the Band without Dylan.
More than that, The Basement Tapes are the Rosetta Stone of the music we now think of as 'Americana' or 'alt.country.' The Basement Tapes could be a new, lo-fi album by Wilco or Ryan Adams.

The vocals were recorded in Chris Stein's basement, in a makeshift booth that was literally a cubbyhole lined with cheap acoustic panels and a few curtains to deaden the sound.
After that, it was back to the basement to put on the finalised bass parts, some of which were a composite of the rehearsal sessions and the recordings we made at Electric Lady.
Then Debbie takes the tape away and writes the full lyrics, and soon after that we put the vocals on.

Nine of the songs are apparently from the "basement tape" made in the cellar of Dylan's upstate New York home more than 18 months ago, shortly before he went to Nashville to record "John Wesley Harding".
All these feature Dylan alone, with an acoustic guitar and harmonica, and if the date is correct, the tape was made before Dylan signed with Columbia.
On other songs, however, the sound reproduction is quite good, and in most of the early material, Dylan even seems to be playing a freer, more imaginative acoustic guitar than he's been heard to pick any time recently.
