Ted Templeman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was Templeman and his colleague, Mo Ostin who convinced Warner Bros. to sign the group to the label and Templeman produced their eponymous first album.
In that year he produced the classic eponymous The Doobie Brothers album, followed the next year by the Doobies' Toulouse Street album which achieved platinum record status on the strength of the hit single "Listen to the Music".
In 1973 Templeman produced another classic, the eponymous Montrose album, released in November 1973.

That album contained the first hit single for the Doobies, "Listen to the Music" (number 11 in November, 1972).
It started off as an acoustic song, just an acoustic guitar for the first third of the record, then the drums come in.
There were formula pop records then." Templeman doesn't consider the record perfect.

Ted is more "let's talk about it, what are you trying to go for on this song?" He tries to get it with the band with minimum or no overdubs.
The best way to put it is, as Ted views it, if you can't play a song on acoustic guitar or with just guitar and vocals, and have it get its point across, then something's not working.
They were absolutely floored by how well this band works together, and how quickly and musically efficient the band is. I didn't believe this, but according to them, most bands aren't able to walk into the studio and just blast out a tune without screwing it up a couple of times.

In 1977, he discovered Van Halen in a Hollywood club, and a year later their hugely successful self-titled LP appeared; Templeman went on to helm all of Van Halen's albums through the classic 1984, in the process helping establish the quartet among the world's most popular rock bands.
Not only did Templeman assume vocal and guitar duties with the group, but he also arranged their tight harmonies, eventually even assisting producer Lenny Waronker in the studio.
Born October 24, 1944 in Santa Cruz, California, he began his musical career as a drummer in a variety of local bands; in time he joined the Tikis, who in 1966 evolved into Harpers Bizarre.
