Tape loop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pop musicians, most notably The Beatles, Can, and Pink Floyd, have used tape loops on their albums.
A few years later, Mission of Burma began using loops on their albums, and also began feeding snippets of vocals and guitar recorded moments earlier back into their live mix, thereby introducing live loop effects to punk rock.
A measure of recorded magnetic tape is cut and spliced end to end, creating a circle or loop which can be played continuously, usually on a reel to reel machine.

 Good Old-fashioned Tape Looping
It is not necessary to use an actual “loop” of tape to create the audio looping function, because the audio loop is formed electronically by feeding part of the playback head’s output into the recording input.
The concept that creates musically useful loops is a relatively wide separation between the record and playback heads.
If you observe the tape path, you will note that the tape is fed out by the supply reel on the left side, first passes across the erase head, then the record head, then the playback head, before entering the capstan / pinch-roller assembly, and then is wound onto the take-up reel on the right.

The tape loops available from Robert L's Analog Synths are hand-crafted from the high quality, modern tapes, like Ampex 457, 478, BASF LGR broadcast, and similar.

Along with other aspects of avant-garde classical electronics, tape loops were incorporated into pop music by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp; the influence of the electronic compositions on the Beatles' White Album was also significant.
A loop was at one time a physical object--a loop of tape that was played repeatedly and incorporated into a musical composition.
American followers of such French composers as Pierre Schaeffer and Edgard Varèse began to work with tape loops in perhaps the late 1950s, and became fascinated with their potential for reconnecting music with the hypnotic power that repetition wields in various musical cultures around the world.

 Industrial music
Industrial music is a term that describes a wide range of music, generally mixing rock with samplers and electronic instruments and sounds.
Industrial music grew as an offshoot of electronic music known as musique concrète, which was made by manipulating cut sections of recording tape, and adding very early sound output from analog electronics devices.
Boyd Rice (aka NON) released several albums of noise music, with guitar drones and tape loops creating a cacophony of repetitive sounds.

 Music Concrete
Reversing the reels of recorded material and playing the tape backwards can be used to create reverse reverbs, attacks, etc. Recording the reversed track to another tape deck is the easiest way, although bouncing the reversed track to an empty track on a multi track can be done.
Pink Floyd made the use of tape loops the basis of Dark Side of the Moon (like the Beatles albums, recorded at Abbey Road).
Music concrete was recorded directly to tape with real (concrete) sounds, while musique abstraite was the traditional way of composing by writing down the score to be played later.

 The Best Tapes For Loops
Many tape recorders and special tape reproduction machines were performing the exact same job as the echo machines.
Also, when dubbing multiple tracks on reel to reel recorders, it usually happened that the same tape part is moved back and forth for several hundred times, meaning that the situation of extensive use of the same part of tape is close to that on echo machines.
There is a good article "The MacKenzie Repeater" explaining the use of machines similar to tape echoes.

mixguides consoles Audio Loop editing by professional audio producers editing loops of sounds
Loop usage—albeit with analog tape—dates back to the late '50s, when acts such as Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Pauline Oliveros, and later Pink Floyd, Steely Dan and The Beatles experimented with tape loops and cuts.
There are virtually bazillions of pre-recorded loops, instrument samples and effects sounds that can be downloaded online or purchased on CD or CD-ROM these days, and most of them sound pretty darn good.
Magness used loops to rework the demo for Clarkson's single "Low" from her debut album Thankful.

The method: On December 21st 1999 Tribes of Neurot Neurot created four characteristically different tape loops and began to run them on four different inexpensive reel to reel playback machines with the intention of allowing them to play continuously for the duration of the year.
The concept: A year long experiment was conducted in which Tribes of Neurot documented the degradation and disintegration of four unique sounding analog tape loops.
It was our belief that this unusual amount of time would cause an extreme and sonically interesting degradation of sound due to the inherent nature of magnetic tape and consumer level tape machines.

William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops I-IV - Stylus Magazine
He and his friends went on the roof of his building and played the Loops over and over, all day long, watching the slow death of one New York and the slow rise of another, all the while listening to the death of one music and the creation of another.
As he notes in the liner notes, "The music was dying." But he kept recording, documenting the death of these loops.
In theory, then, this is ambient music: music designed to set a mood, evoke a feeling (like a cinematic score), but one that is not designed for deep listening.

Particularly notable, along with the use of studio tricks such as sound processing, unconventional microphone placements, and vari-speed recording, was the Beatles' use of unconventional instruments for pop music, including string and brass elements, Indian instruments like the sitar, tape loops and early electronic instruments.
Indian music and culture also influenced the band as a whole, with the use of swirling tape loops, droning bass lines, and mantra-like vocals on "Tomorrow Never Knows" (1966) and "Dear Prudence" (1968).
Harrison retained Western musical forms in his later compositions, where he emerged as a significant pop composer in his own right, occasionally reprising major themes that indicated his new relationship with Hindustani music and the Hindu god Krishna.
