T-Bone Burnett in Musician: ca 1985
Burnett's lyrics fit his own criterion; they were about what was going on in the town, in America.
Burnett recreated the songs brilliantly onstage with a backing band that included Heartbreakers drummer/singer Stan Lynch and two sons of Andy Williams (and they were good!).
Little was as honest or powerful as the songs Burnett introduced on Truth Decay, his 1979 solo album.

 T-Bone Burnett
After a period spent on the road with Delaney and Bonnie, Burnett was invited to participate as a guitarist in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975; when the tour ended, he and some of his fellow Revue musicians went on to create The Alpha Band, releasing a self-titled debut in 1977.
Throughout the remainder of the 1980s, Burnett lent his production skills to numerous successful records by performers such as Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, Los Lobos and BoDeans.
T-Bone Burnett began his musical activity in Fort Worth, where he played with local blues bands and eventually opened his own recording studio.

Released as a one-off project for MCA's briefly revived country subsidiary Dot Records, T-Bone Burnett's self-titled fourth album is the most austere and uncluttered project he's released to date, quite a switch from the high-concept folk-pop of his best-known work.
On 1992's The Criminal Under My Own Hat, T-Bone Burnett seemed to be searching for a middle ground between his previous two albums, the bright, angular pop/rock of The Talking Animals and the spare, acoustic introspection of T-Bone Burnett.

Rolling Stone (6.12.97), when Burnett's wife suggested that T-Bone listen to The Wallflowers' demo tape, he heard something cleaner, more astringent than the self-pitying wallows that have rushed forth post-grunge.
But Burnett agreed to produce the Wallflowers because he heard three or four real big, honest-to-God songs in there-and, damn, the kid was no complainer.
Despite critical acclaim as a performer, the rootsy singer-songwriter T-Bone Burnett earned his greatest renown as a producer, leading recording sessions for acts ranging from Roy Orbison and Elvis Costello to Counting Crows and Sam Phillips.

The History of Rock Music. T-Bone Burnett: biography, discography, reviews, links
T-Bone (John) Burnett (born in Missouri but raised in Texas) was originally a sideman for Bob Dylan in 1973 and then a member of the Alpha Band, that released the albums Alpha Band (1977), Spark In The Dark (1977) and Statue Makers Of Hollywood (1978).
Burnett went from rocker to folksinger with the acoustic T-Bone Burnett (MCA, 1986), whose bluesy ballads (River Of Love, Oh No Darling) and tex-mex accents still echo Bob Dylan's mid-1970s style.
The results are mixed: Burnett has lost some of his innocence, and not gained enough depth.
