Syncopation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In music, syncopation is the stressing of a normally unstressed beat in a bar or the failure to sound a tone on an accented beat.
In the form of a back beat, syncopation is used in virtually all contemporary popular music.

 Syncopation
In fact, syncopation is so important in many of the African-American music traditions that the type of syncopation used is one of the easiest ways to identify the type of music.
If you want to hear more syncopated rhythms, listen to some Scott Joplin rags or some "big band" music.
Other musical traditions tend to be more rhythmically complex than Western music, and much of the syncopation in modern music is due to the influence of other traditions.

SYNCOPATION [syncopation] [New Gr.,=cut off ], in music, the accentuation of a beat that normally would be weak according to the rhythmic division of the measure.
Occasional syncopation is present in music of all types and in all periods.
It predominates, however, in African music and therefore in African-American music through which it became the principal element in ragtime (see jazz).

 Syncopation
Syncopation is often thought of as being a modern invention, being used exclusively in jazz and pop music.
However, it exists in music of several centuries ago, including the music of Bach and Mozart.
It has become very popular in the last 100 years because of the strong influence from African music in dance music, rock and pop music.

 The Influence of African Rhythms
Talk of syncopation, call and response, and timbre can get complex and technical, but on a basic level, they are the soul of this new African American music: they give the music "looseness" and excitement, relaxation and drive.
The music of Africa informed the music of Charleston in a very central way; it is impossible to quantify the many influences, but it is possible to highlight three of the most recognizable and important contributions.
The choosing of where to place melodic elements over the underlying beats is another striking difference between European and African music.

Does Jazz Put the 'Sin' in Syncopation?
Many people classify under the title of "jazz" all music in syncopated rhythm, whether it be the ragtime of the American Negro or the csardas of the Slavic people.
The melodic line is disjointed and disconnected by the accenting of the partial instead of the simple tone, and the same effect is produced on the melody and harmony which is noticed in syncopated rhythm.
In ragtime the rhythm is thrown out of joint, as it were, thus distorting the melody; in jazz exactly the same thing is done to the harmony.
