Symphony No. 9 (Mahler) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
After all, Mahler scribbled a farewell to Music and
The Symphony No. 9 (D major) by Gustav Mahler was written in 1909 and 1910.
It is reminiscent of the second movement of Mahler's Fourth Symphony in the distortion of a traditional dance into a dance of death.

INKPOT#94 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: MAHLER Symphony No.9. Chicago SO/Boulez (DG)
Pierre Boulez 's Mahler Ninth Symphony on DG has raised the eyebrows of many music lovers in the broadest manner possible, with reactions ranging from heartfelt admiration to unforgiving damnation forming the basis of many reviews in music magazines and websites.
Like Das Lied (von der Erde) and the unfinished Tenth, this valedictory symphonic piece were written at a time when the composer was no longer searching for the existence of God - as in the Wunderhorn series, or confronting, denying and eventually succumbing to Death's omnipotent power in the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh symphonies.
While the teutonic length and scope, fearsome virtuosity and astounding depth of the music are something nearly impossible to put off totally in the former, the clarity of the kaleidoscopic timbre within the vast canopy of colour, shades and tone requires the keenest ears, integrity and solid musical training to attain.

 Musical Forms - Symphony
In the Symphonie fantastique and Harold en Italie Berlioz sought to unite the Beethoven conception of the symphony with his own penchant for descriptive, literary-inspired music by means of a recurrent idée fixe.
G.B. Sammartini was among the first Italians to write concert symphonies; composers of the next generation, including Boccherini and Pugnani, inherited his essentially lyrical approach, but Italian composers were not generally interested in the richer, more developed style favoured in Austria and Germany.
About 1735 the Viennese symphony, drawing on the opera overture and chamber music, began to establish an independent course, notably in the works of Monn and Wagenseil.

classical music - andante - gustav mahler
No wonder it upset and scandalised the audiences of the time.
We can almost see the young Mahler here, as he has described himself—a child, lost interminably in his dreams, all alone, motionless, in the heart of the forest, in a trance, listening to the slightest sound from near or far.
One evening in October 1893, in one of the Hamburg concert halls, he conducted a 'Popular Concert in Philharmonic style' composed entirely of first performances of his works, one of which was entitled 'Titan: a musical poem in symphonic form'.

InternetEd Reviews: Mahler- Symphony No. 9 (Claudio Abbado)
While there are plenty of albums that you can find Mahler’s Symphony No. 9 on, this is perhaps the best and certainly the most clean and updated performance yet recorded.
Also, the production on this particular Mahler recording is crystal clear and gives the strings a rich and multi-textural feel that is lacking on some classical albums.

Mahler's Ninth Symphony is one of my favorite symphonic works ever (lined with Shostakovich's Fifth, and Tchaikovsky's Sixth), so I am deparate enough to find the performance most satiable.

SACD Review: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Harnoncourt) - ‘Bruckner: Symphony No.9’
When the fire is in the music, Harnoncourt in concert can unleash orchestral attacks that make you jump right out of your skin, and this recording is no exception.
The first one was by Eliahu Inbal and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony on Teldec in 1984.
It is the contention of musicologist Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs that the mere exclusion of the sketchy finale to this work distorts Bruckner’s musical conception to the point that it no longer stands as representative of Bruckner.

INKPOT#83/I CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Requiem Cycle - SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.13 "Babi Yar" - Inktroduction
This work also tips its hat in the direction of Mussorgsky (for whom Shostakovich had just orchestrated Songs and Dances of Death before starting on this symphony) and Mahler, with whom Shostakovich's music shares a very articulated affinity of mood and awareness of human mortality.
INKPOT#83/I CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: Requiem Cycle - SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No.13 "Babi Yar" - Inktroduction
Technically, the work is fairly straightforward - the words are set syllabically, following the contours of the musical language in simple harmonic style and accented beats.

 [ECHENG.COM] Web Journal :: April :: 2003
I was praying that no one would disturb the moment after the orchestra faded into silence at the end.
Aside from being with my guide a few hours from the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro (bathed in the purple glow of moonlit snow), I have not been so aware of such perfect silence as I was during one of the grand pauses a few minutes from the end of the piece.
The last time I went to see the SF Symphony perform Mahler 9 someone stood up and started clapping before MTT put his hands down.

Chamber Symphony No. 1 for 15 Solo Instruments, Op. 9
Chamber Symphony No. 1 for 15 Solo Instruments, Op.
To its first audiences, the symphony seemed shocking.
This piece is unusual in concentrating all the elements of a symphony into a single movement; in being written for 15 solo instruments; in using chords built up of fourths; and in creating dissonances without immediate resolution.

 Mahler: Symphony No. 9
The Ninth is Mahler's last completed symphony and is considered to be one of his "two greatest works," (the other being the sublime song cycle Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), his symphonic work for voice and orchestra).
Like every one of Mahler's symphonies, if not most all his works, it is a grand musical exposition of his innermost conflicts, of the tensions arising from a profound fear of death and a genuine yearning for the joys of life.
The anguish that so tormented his soul translated into the music that came to be considered his farewell to art and life - his Ninth Symphony, completed in the year before his death at age 50.

BRIDGE 9033 Beethoven: Symphony No. 9
Mahler adds occasional counter-melodies and thickens the scoring in order to create his own heightened dynamic scale.
Mahler’s grand expansion of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony employs an extra 4 horns and an extra set of Timpani, revoicing many passages of the venerable masterpiece.

 Mahler: SYMPHONY No.9
Mahler inherited the romantic conception of music as an expression of a quest for spiritual reality.
Alban Berg referred to the first movement of the Ninth Symphony as “the most glorious [Mahler] ever wrote,” and further observed, “the whole movement is based on a premonition of death which constantly recurs.
In this great work, Mahler experimented with the four-movement symphonic form, producing a masterpiece of musical innovation, satiric writing and poetic drama expressed in purely instrumental terms.
