Symphony No. 6 (Beethoven) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is the scherzo movement of the symphony, which depicts the country folk dancing and reveling.
One of Beethoven's few works of program music, the symphony was labeled at its first performance with the title "Recollections of Country Life."
The coda, which Antony Hopkins has called "arguably the finest music of the whole symphony," starts quietly and gradually builds to an ecstatic culmination for the full orchestra (minus "storm instruments"), with the first violins playing very rapid triplets at the top of their range.

Beethoven, Ludwig van - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Beethoven, Ludwig van
Beethoven's repertoire includes concert overtures; the opera Fidelio (1805, revised 1806 and 1814); 5 piano concertos and 1 for violin&; 32 piano sonatas, including the Moonlight (1801) and Appassionata (1804–05); 17 string quartets; the Mass in D (Missa solemnis) (1819–22); and 9 symphonies, as well as many youthful works.
His best-known symphonies are the Third (Eroica) (1803), originally intended to be dedicated to Napoleon, with whom Beethoven became disillusioned, the Fifth (1807–08), the Sixth (Pastoral) (1808), and the Ninth (Choral) (1817–24), which includes the passage from Johann Schiller's ‘Ode to Joy’ chosen as the anthem of Europe.
He was aware of the problems his music created for listeners and performers alike (part of the slow movement of the Choral Symphony had to be cut at its premiere), but although audiences of the day found his visionary late music difficult, Beethoven's reputation was well established throughout Europe.

Symphony No. 6 (Mahler) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Symphony No. 6 in A minor by Gustav Mahler, sometimes referred to as the Tragische ('Tragic'), was composed between 1903 and 1904 (rev. 1906; scoring repeatedly revised).
Perhaps because of its grim overall mood and its shatteringly pessimistic outcome, the symphony is not the most popular Mahler symphony amongst 'general' listeners.
The first movement also features a soaring melody which the composer's wife, Alma Mahler, claimed was representative of her; this melody is now often known as the "Alma theme".

 October 17
Beethoven became fascinated with the musical sounds of nature years before the composition of the "Pastoral" Symphony: as early as 1803, he notated in one of his sketchbooks a musical rendition of the sound of water in a stream.
With the Sixth Symphony, the evidence is much more concrete than in the other cases, since we have Beethoven's own titles for the individual movements.
Just as the Fifth Symphony's gloomy C-minor Allegro is connected to the finale without a pause, the last three movements of the "Pastoral," the country dance, the storm, and the thanksgiving song, form an uninterrupted sequence.

Program Notes - Beethoven & Schubert in Vienna
It really is the signature of the symphony, for it is itself unfinished: the cellos pass the theme to the violins, who in turn leave one of the most passionate melodies of all time hanging mid-phrase.
Beethoven’s arrival in the countryside is signalled by a suitably rustic drone from the violas and cellos, while the violins introduce the serene but lively first theme, the “awakening of joyful feelings.” The bucolic mood is maintained with uncharacteristically simple harmonies and textures, and themes evocative of peasant dances.
Meanwhile, the Symphony in B minor was the work of a man searching for a solution to a puzzle: exploring innovations in melodic style and bold musical gestures, and developing long-range harmonic expression and astonishing modulations hitherto unknown.

The symphony was first performed on 5 April 1803 at a concert at the Theater an Der Wien which also included the premieres of Beethoven's C minor piano concerto and oratario 'Christus am Oelberge'.
Beethoven's use of this A-B-A-B-A structure for a scherzo was the result of his quest to expand his writing musically and structurally at this time.
Beethoven provides interesting colour effects by having the timpani tuned to octave Fs, an effect he was to repeat in the scherzo of the 9th Symphony.

Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony 5
Beethoven completed this c minor symphony at nearly the same time he finished the F major Symphony, the Pastorale, and, at that first concert, it was the Pastorale that bore the number five.
The program, consisting entirely of Beethoven premieres, began with the Symphony no. 6, followed, in order, by the concert aria, "Ah, perfido", two movements from the Mass in C major, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Symphony no. 5, and, last but not least, the Choral Fantasy.
On December 22, 1808, Viennese devotees of new music made their way to the Theater-an-der-Wien for the most significant concert of the year, one of the most significant concerts in all of music history.

Subtlety and delicacy are not something we usually think of in relation to Beethoven, but there are passages here that are sheer gossamer, juxtaposed with the more characteristic "Sturm und Drang" in a seamless tapestry both majestic and poignant.

Beethoven - Triple Concerto, Symphony No 6 (Pastoral): LSO/Haitink @ Barbican Hall, London : concert review
I was disappointed by the first movement of the Pastoral Symphony, which seemed to lack the glow and sunshine that is inherent in the fabric of this music.
The pairings of different works have been so far invigorating, with the subtle dignity of the Violin Concerto and Seventh Symphony in the first concert well contrasted with the whirlwind colours of the Second and the Eroica in the second instalment.
Haitink's Beethoven is a varied creature, and the LSO's cycle of his symphonic music gets more intriguing with each new concert.

Beethoven actually composed the Sixth Symphony in 1807-1808, although he had jotted down the musical idea that appears in the slow movement several years earlier.
This recording was made in the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra’s new auditorium at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center using state of the art Euphonix digital recorders and consoles and an assortment of microphones.
It received its premier at a mammoth concert in December 1808 that included the premier of the Fifth Symphony, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Choral Fantasy and four other works – and some concert that must have been.
