Symphony No. 6 (Mahler) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Symphony No. 6 in A minor by Gustav Mahler, known as the Tragic, was composed between 1903 and 1905.
The piece is unique among Mahler's symphonies in ending in an unambiguously tragic manner.
Perhaps because of its grim mood, the symphony is not very popular amongst general listeners.

Mahler: Symphony No 3; Höller: Der Ewige Tag, Lipovsek/ WDR Choir and Symphony Cologne/ Bychkov Avie
The added value to Semyon Bychkov's eloquent yet uneventful account of Mahler's Third Symphony, recorded at the Cologne Philharmonie last year with Marjana Lipovsek as the classy contralto soloist, is the first recording of York Höller's Der Ewige Tag from 2001.
The piece is organised according to the usual Höller principles, with a "sonic form" acting as the source of the music's harmonic and melodic material - a gene pool for all its events.

 Franz Schubert
During this period, the 18-year-old composer produced over 200 pieces of music, including 150 songs, four Singspiele (spoken plays with songs—the Viennese equivalent of musical comedies), two masses, two string quartets and two symphonies.
(Beethoven's mature symphonies, still "modern music" at this time, have left no mark—yet.) The orchestration is small-scale, recalling symphonies of the 1770s, lacking clarinets, trumpets and drums.
This work offers the sort of winsome melodies and rich harmonic palette for which Schubert's music is treasured, but something else as well: a surprisingly Italian sense of melodic buoyancy and instrumental color, particularly in its use of the woodwinds.

The Symphony No. 9 (D major) by Gustav Mahler was written in 1909 and 1910.
It is reminiscent of the second movement of Mahler's Fourth Symphony in the distortion of a traditional dance into a dance of death.

Symphony No. 3 (Mahler) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Symphony No. 3 in D minor by Gustav Mahler was written between 1893 and 1896.
Despite this, it is a popular work and has been recorded by most major orchestras and conductors.
As in his Symphony No. 2, Mahler adds vocal forces to the later movements of the piece.

I have listened to all recordings of this symphony and this is the best by far (Abbado's latest comes in a close second though).
You'd never know Boulez was the "arch Modernist" listening to this recording; Boulez rips and pulls you out of the wet and muddy Spring soil like a flower among rocks and thorns - one almost levitates as he listens (if one listens closely) - the music just lifts you with its booming echoes and reverbs.

classical music - andante - gustav mahler
No other piece of music approaches this coda for its sense of devastation and desolation.
Unlike the songs of triumph and faith that play an essential role in Bruckner's symphonies, this is a 'negative' chorale and, as such, one of the symphony's most striking innovations.
Mahler read Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Tolstoy's grim Confessions.

Orchestral Excerpts: Mahler - Symphony No. 3
The trombone solo in the first movement of Mahler's "Symphony No. 3" between rehearsal numbers 13 and 17 is unique in style, phrasing, and importance to the overall musical picture.
Listen to as many recordings with different orchestras as you can find, and get to know the differences between them before you begin your practice First become an expert on Mahler's third symphony, and then make up your mind as to how you want to perform these excerpts.
After having studied this symphony with my teacher Professor Willy Walther, who had performed it very successfully with the Berlin Philharmonic under the late Sergiu Celibache, and having performed it more than 30 times myself, I have very strong convictions about this wonderful music.

REVIEW 1: PROM 52: Mahler Symphony no 3,
Willem Mengelberg conducted the first Mahler symphony cycle in 1920 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra and since then this orchestra has become more identified with Mahler’s music than any other.
The Concertgebouw sound is now recognised as the authentic Mahler sound‚ by turns dark, gritty, sombre, raw, raucous, acidic.

 Mahler Symphony No 3
Adler’s recording of the Third was made in Vienna in 1951 with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and, on first release, boasted sleeve notes by Alma Mahler herself.
The name Charles Adler might be unfamiliar to many people today but he was a Mahler pioneer who made the first recordings of the Third and Sixth Symphonies, as well as the Adagio of the Tenth, for a label he financed from his own resources.
However, I still want you to be aware of this recording for all that it can tell us about Mahler performing practice.

 Mahler Symphony No.3 on Record
Mahler, addressing the Cologne Orchestra at the beginning of rehearsals for the premiere, June 1902.
The last movement refers to the Wunderhorn song Das himmlische leben (The Heavenly Life) which Mahler had written in 1902, and which was eventually to find a home as the finale of the Fourth Symphony.
The gestation of the Third Symphony was far shorter than that of the Resurrection, and yet far more complex, and a number of draft plans for the layout of the symphony survive, either in Mahler's own papers or in his correspondence.

 Encyclopedia: Symphony No. 2 (Mahler)
The fourth movement, Urlicht, is another Wunderhorn song, actually sung this time, by an alto who Mahler requests should sound like a small child in heaven.
The symphony began life as Totenfeier (Funeral Rites), a one movement symphonic poem based on an epic poem by Adam Mickiewicz, which Mahler completed in 1888.
A typical performance of the whole symphony will last in the region of 85 minutes.

Amazon.com: Music: Mahler: Symphonie No.3 in D Minor
Not only is the longest symphony in the standard repetoire, it also showcases Mahler's desire to show the entire universe in a symphony.
This is the longest symphony ever written that's in the international repertoire, but listening to Bernstein's way with it, you'd never guess.
I haven't listened to the Third in many years, and this second Bernstein recording exceeded all my considerable expectations.( I believe I used to own the fine Horenstein recording.) The sound quality is fabulous--the performance incomparable.

If there's any doubt at all that the Mahler renaissance is alive and well in middle America, then this recording should dispel any doubts.
The Cincinnati Symphony--their brass section in particular-- clearly took this project as a challenge, and it sounds like they must have blown the music right...
