 Black metal
Black metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music.
Black metal congealed in its current form through the influence of Norwegian bands such as Darkthrone, Carpathian Forest, Burzum, Mayhem, Immortal and Emperor, who began with the earlier style and introduced elements from mainstream heavy metal, classical music and hardcore punk and popularized the style to a growing underground audience.
Black metal enthusiasts also started to terrorize other notable "death metal" bands that were touring their country or in neighboring countries, on the basis of their lack of apparent "evilness".

Metal Reviews - Metal Coven Webzine - Metal Reviews - Cradle Of Filth - Damnation And A Day
Certainly, for a band like Cradle of Filth, three years is too long to wait for more symphonic black metal (I don't count most of their releases in the interim, as they were not actually new music).
As many times as I've listened to this album, I can't hear a single "pop single" or anything that isn't dark orchestral or symphonic black metal.
I apologize if I seem to be overzealous on this topic, but when I listen to "Damnation and a Day," I hear 76 minutes of music that would never, ever be played on MTV or pop radio.

This is one of the most interesting new black metal acts out there and Iґm very curious to see what they can achieve with their next album where they will take use of a symphony orchestra and a church choir.
Bands have done this style of music to death, pushing the savage black metal wails as far as they can go, and it is nice to hear a band like Tvangeste collect their ideas, borrow from their chosen genre, and produce beautiful results (thanks to work from violins and keyboards).

Stormblåst received high praise from many melodic black metal fans, and is often regarded a highlight of the band's career.

Sear Bliss - 'Forsaken Symphony' review @ into-obscurity.com[enter the underground]
They create atmospheric, symphonic black metal, but unlike most of the standout bands of this genre, they keep the music relatively primitive, and avoid the flamboyant use of keyboard enhancement.
One thing I found interesting about this album is that it's almost a concept album, but not.
A few of the songs are interrelated and a few of the others tie in to songs from previous Sear Bliss albums, while yet others are just stand alone concepts that contain a lot of introspection into the human conciousness.

 EMPEROR
The majority of the symphonic parts went away for a more moderate use, the guitars make the main part, as in the “Anthems…” there is an aggressive and incredible drums performance, but there aren’t the same ingenious melodies and complex arrangements of the previous opus.
In the back cover of the album Ihsahn and Samoth said that “Emperor performs Sophisticated Black Metal..”, and they totally hit the point, because it’s incredible how they were able to bring their sound to a new dimension, more complex, sometimes psychotic, a deeper version of their debut with more complex arrangements.
A lot of symphonic keyboards choruses together with a wall of black metal guitars worked perfectly to create a majestic, mystic, occult and mysterious music, in a way that so many bands try to copy without the same success.

A friend of mine who is not into black metal (not mentioning any names here) heard this album, and he told that he liked all the intros of the songs - all the songs were great until the screaming vocals came.
Black Seeds on Virgin Soil will have to be my favorite track on the album — it starts out with an acoustic guitar intro, and then builds up from there.
The style of the music is symphonic black metal a la Dimmu Borgir, which means a nice mix of moody keyboard parts with fast guitar riffs and drums.

They played adventurous, symphonic black metal, clearly rooted in the tradition of Emperor and the like, but with greater dynamics and range, featuring complex arrangements and clear classical music influences to create a rich, dynamic, yet still inherently black metal style.
During their six-year run between 1997 and 2002 they were prolific recording-wise, releasing five albums of relatively uniform style and quality, though not without progression and maturation on the later material.
In particular, albums such as The Ultimate Death Worship and In Abhorrence Dementia place the band in the upper echelon of prime Norwegian symphonic black metal artists.

Triarchy of Vasconia: Iluntasunaren Itzulera--from Satan Stole My Teddybear
All three bands' songs are long and complex, juxtaposing symphonic black metal elements, long instrumental breaks, and extended acoustic folk passages; yet these genre hops never sound forced, and the compositions flow very naturally.
Iluntasunaren Itzulera ("the return of darkness") is a split CD featuring three Basque bands playing a combination of folk music and symphonic black metal, complete with atmospheric intros, woodwinds, violins, bombastic keyboards and operatic vocals.

 BNR Metal Pages -- Tyrant
This Tyrant is a Japanese black metal band, who on their debut album (1997's Under A Dark Mystic Sky) nails the early Norwegian symphonic black metal style (think early Dimmu Borgir as one reference point) to a T -- indeed, it's probably one of the most Norwegian-sounding albums from a band not from Norway.
Tyrant has yet to truly branch out and discover their own style, (perhaps their new Grimoires, released in 2005, will establish a unique identity), but for traditional symphonic black metal, both Legend and Mystic Sky are accomplished and recommended listens.
By the time of Legend, released five years later, the band had matured and developed a bit -- still very much rooted in symphonic black metal, but with a less harsh style, with the more dominating keyboards giving the band a more melodic edge.

 Gorgoroth - Demonic Black Metal
At its base remaining the same the music is trancelike repetitive black metal with blasting beats, a screeching dementia on vocals, and pulsing guitar working deliberately simple riffs into evolving motifs in a masterpiece.
Review: To express further the romanticized moribundity of previous efforts Gorgoroth created an EP of monstrous proportions that despite its brevity expresses a viewfinder into the aging world of black metal, expanding the scope of its composition through complex tracks building conventional music pieces out of unconventional Gorgoroth musical language.

Symphonic black metal - definition of Symphonic black metal in Encyclopedia
Symphonic black metal has the same components as melodic black metal but a lot more orchestral pieces, mostly during the entire length of the song, mixed with the black metal element.
Symphonic black metal often can be confused with Norwegian Gothic Metal and there are some bands who are classified as both (Cradle of Filth or Summoning for instance).
This sub-genre of black metal has gained much criticism from black metal purists who argue that it is a watered down version of the real thing.

With most other albums in metal being better than this one, it is impossible to imagine buying it.
Veering away from the neoclassical orchestration that made Stormblåst brilliant, Dimmu Borgir instead fill a pop album with heavy metal riffs and bouncy melodies trailing happily irrelevant keyboards and black metal trappings behind.
On this EP of mostly rehashed material Dimmu Borgir merge raw versions of their older music with stripped down takes from their newer style, coming up with a handy method of ripping off black metal in sound without discovering any of the musicality it once had.

The band played a heavily Thrash influenced Death Metal which didn't really shine with originality, as the feedback for the band's first demo, the primitive "Invoking The Unclean", seemed to display.
