Swing (genre) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are characterised by the swing rhythm already at that time common in jazz music, and a lively style which is harder to define but distinctive.
The second change that occurred as swing music increased in popularity outside the black community, was, to some extent, an increasing pressure on musicians and band leaders to soften (some would say dumb-down) the music to cater to a more staid and conservative, Anglo-American audience.
In later decades, the popular, sterilized, mass-market form of swing music would often, and unfortunately, be the first taste that younger generations might be exposed to, which often led to it begin labeled something akin to 'old fogey big-band dance music'.

Jazzitude Jazz History 3: Swing & Big Bands
Swing music is a style, just like dixieland and bebop are styles of music played by certain groups of musicians at a certain time in history.
In the height of the swing era, the bands could be quickly recognized based on factors such as the instrumental style of the leader, the sound and style of the arrangments, and the individual voices of the primary soloists within each organization.
In other words, the swing era was the last time that jazz music and American popular music were one and the same.

Between the Wars: The Swing Era
Swing bands typically used an upright or double bass instead of the tuba which had often characterized dixieland, and played repeated "riffs" to give the music its propulsive rhythmic force.
By the late twenties, musicians had begun modifying the forms of "jazz." In the 1930s a new form of jazz had emerged, called "swing." Swing music was characterized by very large bands, fixed, usually written arrangements, and solos by individual musicians in turn instead of group improvisation.
Historians have seen in "the swing era" not just music but culture, a distinctive, generational culture of swing jazz with its own dances, clothing styles, and most notably, slang.

Chapter Excerpt: The Swing Book by Degen Pener
Swing was as important for its cultural resonance as it was for its musical achievement.
Looked at historically, swing was jazz music played by big bands primarily for dancing.
Swing, of course, is hardly just a musical concept.

Swing Music Net - Big Band Music / Jazz History
The language of swing is still spoken today by a number of talented latter-day jazz musicians and modern swing bands.
Furthermore smaller jazz groups, comprised of both former big band era soloists and new young musicians alike, have continued to utilize many parallel distinctions of the language of swing in their playing and recordings since the fall of the big bands.
The period of the 1930s and 1940s is thus far the only age in history when the popularity of jazz eclipsed all other genres of music in the U.S. It is an epoch known as the big band era, and during it swing music was king.

 Jazz to Swing
Instrumentation in swing bands includes trumpets and trombones which gives swing music a brighter, brassier sound than the more mellow jazz.
The growing musical form soon merged with the concert band and society dance band styles that were popular elsewhere during the twenties to create the big bands of the Swing Era.
More than jazz, swing music is arranged for the dancers, whose artistic input is responsible for forming swing music almost as much as the music influenced the

Swing was dance music, yet it offered individual musicians a chance to improvise musically fresh, technically complex solos.
The golden age of the Big Band era, from about 1935-1949, was unique in that it was the music listened to by all generations in the 1930's and 40's, young and old alike.
As swing dancers learned more about different types of swing music and began to appreciate the experiences of dancing to different styles and tempos of swing music, a greater variety of music began to be played at swing dances, and certain trends developed.

Swing Era (from jazz) --  Britannica Student Encyclopedia
Swing music has a compelling momentum that results from musicians' attacks and accenting in relation to fixed beats.
Perhaps the most magnificent “swing machine” that ever was, the Basie band strongly emphasized improvised solos and a refreshing looseness in ensemble playing that was usually realized through “head arrangements” rather than written-out charts.
Swing rhythms defy any narrower definition, and the music has never been notated exactly.

From a purely musical standpoint, the Swing Era is the time of large dance orchestras--the "big bands" of the period.
The Swing Era is the term routinely given to jazz of the 1930s--the era of big bands, high profiles, and glitzy commercial successes, the music of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and many others.

The Historical Evolution of the Jazz Trombone: Part Two
In the Swing Era, the majority of the music was arranged previous to the performance, due to the larger nature of the band.
While Dixieland bands were small combos consisting of about six to eight musicians, a swing era big band usually had four trumpets, three or four trombones, four or five saxophones, piano, bass, drums, and sometimes a guitar.
As with Dixieland, dancing was the primary focus of the music.

 Swing Era: Style
Examination of stylistic musical criticism reveals that the notion that African-American musical forms provided a "raw material" which could not be fully recognized without the intervention of white swing musicians or white scholars studying swing was not new to the "white jazz biopic" of the late '40s and early '50s.
Many of the distinctive characteristics of Swing involved the way the music was communicated and absorbed.

He is very passionate about swing music, it is obvious, but many of his descriptions and comparisons are practically worthless to the student of music.
In contrast to the proliferating reminiscences and social histories of the big band era, Schuller's concern is purely with the music.
Moreover, one really needs to be able to listen to the described music to enjoy the book, but this is also its strong point: one becomes really eager to listen to the jazz described, often with 'new ears' provided by the author.

Gary Giddins conversation on big bands on Jerry Jazz Musician
The big band era was one of the most important periods in the history of music.
The difference was that, unlike the first swing era, when music was performed primarily for dancers, theirs was a concert music featuring a larger group instead of a small group.
When we think of the big band era now, we think of the great bands that survived because they had enduring musical interest, and most of them were successful.

Holiday's father was a guitar and banjo player in Fletcher Henderson's band, and she entered the world of professional music as a teenager, signing with Columbia Records in 1933.
Her first recordings were with the bands of Benny Goodman and Count Basie, and she toured with Count Basie and Artie Shaw in 1937 and 1938.
His virtuoisity as a soloist led to abandonment of the previous standard practice in jazz of concentrating on individual instruments' relation to the group as a whole, and to increased importance of solos.

ARTIE SHAW: 1910-2004 / Bandleader was last of the swing-era giants
In 1937, Shaw formed a more standard swing band -- 'the loudest goddamned band in the world," he said sardonically -- and over the next year shaped it into the seamless ensemble that recorded "Begin the Beguine" and would become what some consider the finest white orchestra of the period.
He eventually returned to studio work and in 1936 was asked to put together a band to play an interlude at a Swing concert at the Imperial Theater featuring stars like Tommy Dorsey and the Casa Loma Band.
But his phenomenally successful 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine" made the handsome musician a pop idol, and his band the hottest in America.

 Count Basie
Much of the success of the rhythm section was due to both "Papa" Joe Jones, one of Basie's contemporaries and pioneer of the constant high-hat cymbal style, as well as the fact they practiced independently of the band on many occasions to exact the buoyant swing heard in the music.
Some of their greatest songs include "One O'Clock Jump" and "Taxi War Dance." Despite the talent present throughout the band, they had to split up due to financial reasons in 1950.
