It is commonly associated with musical groups, such as a string quintet, or a group of five singers, but can be applied to any situation where five similar or related objects are considered a single unit.
In jazz music a quintet is any group of five players, usually containing a drum set (pedal bass, snaredrum sometimes brushed, and top hat and brushed cymbals), string bass or electric bass, and groups of one or two of the following instruments, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, or trombone.

The DaPonte String Quartet was formed in Philadelphia in 1991, and came to Maine in 1995 on a Rural Residency Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and Chamber Music America.
This season, the DaPonte String Quartet began a three-year parachute residency at the University of North Texas, the largest college of music in the country.
