 Amazon.com: Avalon: Music: Roxy Music
Compared to the earlier albums of the "rock and roll" version of Roxy, "Avalon" is thin, shallow, and unsatisfying: contrast it to "Stranded" and "Country Life" and it just doesn't come of as anything of substance.
Avalon is that album -- it tells a story from the first song to the last, and it definitely takes you on a journey with it.
Nonetheless, its a beauty of an album, who cares what shape the band was in when it was recorded.

 USATODAY.com - Slow-building single keeps Maroon 5's star rising
After sailing into uncharted waters with a niche-resistant rock 'n' soul debut album, Maroon 5 stayed stranded in the pop's nether regions for more than a year.
Breathe helped lift Maroon 5's Songs for Jane to a peak two weeks ago of No. 47 on the Billboard album chart, where it has percolated for 47 weeks.
The debut album has sold 336,000 copies since its release in June 2002, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Rolling Stone : Insomniac : Review
With its members barely into their 20s, this Bay Area trio brought punk kicking and sneering onto the pop charts with its third album, last year's Dookie.
Insomniac begins at a breathless pogopop pace with "Armatage Shanks" and "Brat." When a lyric fragment jumps out of the thick mix, it sticks like glue after the sonic rumble moves on: "Stranded...
The core message of Insomniac – like all great punk records – is that redemption is possible only through cold-eyed realism, not trendy nihilism or bleak despair.

 Popocalypse: World's Finest Music Reviews
Those who persevered with the album, made with the same lineup as Stranded, found an album almost as good as that record.
As Ferry rush-released a solo album, there were many rumors that the band had split, but surprisingly they continued, with Eddie Jobson replacing Eno and John Gustafson replacing Porter, and had a second album out later that year.
The new bassist for the album was Gary Tibbs, and Jobson's contributions were split between Ferry and Paul Carrack.

'The Bar at the End of the World' by Lupine Howl from The Portsmouth Chorus.
Lupine Howl's second album finds them continuing to wreak remarkable results from what may appear an unwieldy collection of influences with their muse stranded roughly equidistant from 90s Bristol trip-hop and 70s Los Angeles country rock.
Lupine Howl have discovered, however, that the musical bleakness of the former goes very well indeed with the lyrical self-pity of the latter, and The Bar at the End of the World is riddled with great songs.

In 1966 tracks 7 & 8 first released as a single for Christmas and on Columbia Special Products' The Great Songs of Christmas (Album Six) exclusively for Goodyear stores.
After listening to the rarely performed introductory verse about being stranded in Beverly Hills on Christmas Eve, she agreed to record the song.

THE METAL OBSERVER - Review - TIERRA SANTA - Apocalipsis
And on their previous album “Indomable” they had already incorporated some Rock influences, which, I think, was not the worst possible idea not to get stranded in the dead end of copying themselves.
Still I like the band best, when they put the energy all out and that should be the goal for the next album, but until then “Apocalipsis” still once more is an absolutely recommendable album.
On “Apocalipsis“ this trend continues and as commendable as the will to change (a bit) is, I have to say that the energy suffers a bit from that, which had been one of the trademarks of the band ever since.

Not Roxy at their best (that was the 1st album and/or Stranded) but a pre-cursor to later works like Flesh And Blood and Avalon while not so soulless.
Is it because it's a countrified album and is a continuation of the prairie rose style.
My favourite album is Siren, although I still like Manifesto, Flesh+Blood etc...I'd guess it's partially down to the fact that I got into Roxy/Ferry in the late 70's.

 Something Awful
We’re left with a laughable goofball of an album; the lyrics are basically incomprehensible and the music is stranded between the Manics’ old Guns n’ Roses influences and a half-developed post-punk sound.
Another tenth-anniversary reissue, this is a deluxe edition of what many consider to be the only decent album by a band which is nonetheless famous for some reason.
Some people refer to a Greatest Hits album as the “gold watch” of the music industry, a final reward for a band on its way out.

Amazon.co.uk: Country Life [Original recording remastered]: Music
'Country Life' is where it all changed for Roxy Music; 'Stranded' had moved away and into the avant-garde with 'Mother of Pearl'.
It is one of the albums blander moments- towards the sound of 'Siren'...'All I Want is You' is a lovely glitter turns penthouse stomp- one of the finest Roxy singles with great guitar from Manzanera.
Looking at the reviews of other Roxy albums here, every one of the first five albums seems to have its devotees for different reasons, but for consistently excellent songs, "Country Life" represents the cream of their output.

 Roxy Music: Fyfeopedia Music Reviews
The Early Years compiles songs from Roxy Music's first three albums: 1972's Roxy Music, and 1973's For Your Pleasure and Stranded.
The album has a lovely atmosphere with Ferry's tasteful synths and the restrained melodic guitars, and the songs are consistently enjoyable.
The material from the first two albums still sounds fresh and must have sounded crazy in the early 1970s: Brian Eno's synthesisers are still pretty weird, while the group changes style every song.

Roxy Music : Country Life - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Continuing with the stylistic developments of Stranded, Country Life finds Roxy Music at the peak of their powers, alternating between majestic, unsettling art rock and glamorous, elegant pop/rock.
And, in many ways, Country Life offers the greatest and most consistent set of Roxy Music songs, illustrating their startling depth.
At their best, Roxy combine these two extremes, like on the exhilarating opener "The Thrill of It All," but Country Life benefits considerably from the ebb and flow of the group's two extremes, since it showcases their deft instrumental execution and their textured, enthralling songwriting.

Siren by Roxy Music (lyrics & reviews)
This album is frequently mentioned as the Roxy album to own--it isn't and that honor belongs to COUNTRY LIFE, STRANDED or FOR YOUR PLEASURE for the early material and AVALON and MANIFESTO(Without the disco version of "Angel eyes) for later Roxy.
Siren was the big mid-career transitional album for Roxy.
I haven't heard their previous albums so I can't say that I am true about it but anyway this CD is just awesome.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Supernatural - DC Talk at Epinions.com
On past albums, Toby MacKeehan (who provided that ever-so-catchy rapping) was the main lyricist, but on this album, all three of the guys collaborated on just about everything, with a little assistance from writers like Mark Hemiermann (whose name pops up everywhere in Christian music, but his contributions to dc Talk have been excellent).
It echoes themes from several songs on the album, which further proves that the guys worked really hard to stick with the concept of this thing while not losing the value of each of the songs when taken individually.
Its lyrical content seems to echo that of "Minds' Eye" on their last album, but the fact that they use the X-Files mantra "The truth is out there" in the chorus makes it seem like it was on the soundtrack and then recycled for the album.

For successive albums, the cowboy would be portrayed being ejected from a saloon, stranded in a desert and struggling with a pair of boots.
This album proved their masterwork, one of the best and most underrated records produced in country rock.
A single from the album, "Amie", was a US hit and prompted the return of John Call, but when Fuller left in 1975 to form American Flyer, the group lost its major writing talent and inspiration.

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantstic - Prince - Review - Nice Edition 2 Ur Collection But No Way A Classic
The only songs on this album i would reccomend are "so far, so pleased" which is a duet with gwen steffin of No Doubt about two young people where one purposly gets them stranded for the reason of "you know what i mean".
Its over a year this album was released and still there hasnt been a new album, a remix version of this album called " Rave IN2 the joy fantastic" (not UN2) has been promised, but there is a live party/concert filmed at Paisley parks neatly named Rave Un2 the Year2000 is also available.
The other song i would reccomend is the title track "Rave un2 the Joy fantastic" which is an old PRINCE song, i loved the gituar in it, there should of been a video, it would of been an excellent show with mayte dancing and prince roaring away.

 BBC - h2g2 - Foo Fighters - the Band
The band's fourth album One by One followed in 2002, and saw a slight curve towards a heavier sound as the commercial feel-good tracks were outnumbered by the balls-out rock songs harking back to the first album in sound terms.
Realising that this one-man band was fine for the studio, but impossible for touring, in trying to promote an album, Grohl recruited the aid of former band-mate Smear on guitar, Nate Mendell on bass and sticksman William Goldsmith.
Grohl wrote, played and recorded the entire first Foo Fighters album alone, and the influence of the late Cobain can often be felt in the raw and heavy tracks that dot the album.

Stranded: Rock and Roll for a Desert Island:Marcus, Greil; Christgau, Robert:0306806827:eCampus.com
The resulting essays were collected in Stranded, twenty passionate declarations that, appropriately, affirmed the solitary and obsessive activity that rock listening had become.
In 1978, Greil Marcus asked twenty other writers on rock - including Dave Marsh, Lester Bangs, Nick Tosches, Ellen Willis, Simon Frith, and Robert Christgau - a question: what one rock and roll album would you take to a desert island?
Stranded remains a classic of rock and roll literature, and perhaps the best possible answer to the question: what one rock and roll book would you take to a desert island?
