 [No title]
Stetsasonic's seminal first album, On Fire, which included the evergreen sample "Go Brooklyn," was released in 1986 on Tommy Boy Records and was followed in 1988 by In Full Gear.
In 1993, Stetsasonic planned to reunite for a fourth album, but troubled negotiations with record labels scotched the idea.
After Stetsasonic's third album, Blood, Sweat & No Tears, was released in 1991, Daddy-O reached the conclusion that the group had run out of inspiration and decided to break up the band.

 Excite - Tommy Boy Music's 20th Anniversary
Stetsasonic, and say Gang Starr, were really experimenting and mixing jazz with hip-hop.
Stetsasonic's "Sally" was another track that looked back to the old-school by using new sampling technology to cut up classic breaks like "Mustang Sally" and James Brown loops.
With a Donald Byrd trumpet sample and lyrics that defended the use of the sampler as a tool that could revive the careers of fading artists, "Talkin' All That Jazz", released in 1988, confronted critics of hip-hop and sampling.

Any discussion of old-school rap would be incomplete without them, and "All That Jazz" remains a classic, linking hip-hop to what some, at the time of its release, considered a more refined style of music.

Salon Entertainment The artist currently known as Prince Paul
In 1996, Paul released his first solo album, "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" a mostly instrumental record that gave hip-hop a brain and allowed its subconscious to open up on vinyl.
At the beginning, Prince Paul, the 31-year-old Paul Huston, was just a kid DJ with New York old-schoolers Stetsasonic.
Def Jam Records pegged Paul with his own boutique label, Dew Doo Man Records, which never happened: The company refused to release every artist he signed.

Rap music, with its heavily accented drum patterns, its syncopated handclaps, and, most important, its vocals-chanted rather than sung, usually in rhymed couplets-is among the oldest of black musics.
The African tribesman singing his "Song Of Self Praise" on _Bulu Songs From the Cameroon_ and the emcee puffing his chest out in Stetsasonic's "In Full Gear" have one thing in common: They're both rappers.

I would agree with that.  People may argue and say Pumpkin because he was the producer for record labels like PROFILE and others back then.  We were the first as a group to be out.  You know!  Having an emcee, DJ, Keyboards and the Human Beat Box.  I think we were the first.
Everything we had in the group embodied Hip Hop.&; DJing obviously because you sample, the human beat box was a big part of it and keyboards.  Every once in a while I'll record live instrumentation and chop stuff up but I sample  from vinyl.  I learned more life lesson than music production with STETSASONIC.

Stetsasonic's A.F.R.I.C.A. (1987) was one of the first rap records to deal with Afrocentric issues.
They were also the first group to emphasize live instrumentation in rap music.
Their debut album, On Fire (1986), was rather naive, but both In Full Gear (1988) and Blood, Sweat & No Tears (1991), influenced by Public Enemy's social commentary, were superb realizations.

The sound of On Fire is hard and spare: one-at-a-time raps over rhythm tracks (including human beat box noises) with sporadic bits of music added.
Topics are likewise familiar ("My Rhyme," "Faye," "Bust That Groove"), but Stetsasonic has a decisive sound that takes full advantage of the varied voices.
A fine example of rap's producer-oriented developmental process, Brooklyn's Stetsasonic began as a trio of rappers (Daddy-O, Delite and Fruitkwan), a keyboardist/drummer/scratcher (DBC) and two mixers (Prince Paul and Wise).
