Soulfly, the band, was born out that infamous split in late 1996 between Max and the band he founded back in 1984 with his brother Igor, Brazil's speed metal tribe, Sepultura.
Max and his Soulfly guys plan to do "the old switcheroo" live, in fact, when they begin their U.S. tour (with Snot and Head Pea in New Mexico) to coincide with April 21st release of their debut album.
Personally, I think anyone who loved Sepultura won't miss a beat, as Soulfly's music is meatier, with a heavier-sounding rhythm section, accented still more tribal beats.

When Max Cavalera parted ways with Sepultura in 1997 to form Soulfly, the direction of both acts were clearly moving away from each other with the release of every new album.
The instrumental ‘Soulfly IV’ sounds merely like a mellow jam session piece (Interesting, but not great), while ‘Wings’ (With Asha Rabouin on lead vocals) sounds completely out of place with its R’N’B/soul direction (Not to mention the final big band ending piece).
Sepultura have been releasing some strong and consistently progressive forward thinking albums over the years (In particular 2003’s Roorback), while Soulfly have kept it safe and, quite frankly, have been regurgitating the same formula with every new release.

I even think that the third-world feeling they had was a good thing, cause the struggle they had in those years to make the band what it was is missing now, they just seem like a common band now, and I agree with the chemistry thing, its true, it is a different kind of chemistry.

Soulfly: Prophecy - PopMatters Music Review
Granted, it's the best Soulfly album yet; excellently mixed by Terry Date, and featuring former Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson on three tracks (including the spectacular title track), Prophecy is not as crazed as 2000's Primitive, and despite the presence of "Moses" (what in heaven's name was Max thinking?), it's not as self-indulgent as 2002's 3.
Which makes it all the more shocking when you hear the title track from Soulfly's new album, Prophecy.
