Acid jazz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acid jazz (also known as groove jazz or more recently club jazz) is a musical genre that combines jazz influences with elements of soul music, funk, disco and also nineties english dance music, particularly repetitive beats and modal harmony.
The shuffling soulful groove and infectious lyrics of Lovesick from the Night Trains' second album augured well but the album never took off and despite a third album Hugh Brooker moved on to writing music for the movies.
Acid Jazz released a one-off single from the singer and co-writer of Soul II Soul’s ‘Fairplay’.

 Trombone Page of the World
Although virtually all jazz groups prior to the rise of bebop in the early to mid-'40s played for dancers, the term "dance bands" is used to describe orchestras of the 1920s and '30s whose primary function was to play background music for dancers rather than to serve as vehicles for jazz improvisations.
Not all jazz from the 1920s can be described as "New Orleans Jazz" or "Dixieland." The 1920s were a rich decade musically with jazz-influenced dance bands and a gradual emphasis on solo (as opposed to collective) improvisations.
Contemporary funk refers to a kind of jazz from the 1970s and 1980s in which accompanists perform in the Black pop style of soul and funk music while extensive solo improvisations ride atop.

Also included on the CD is a bonus album, “My Kind of Jazz,” recorded with a big band in 1970.
After he laid the foundation for the future of soul with his seminal Atlantic albums, and just before he bridged the gap between rhythm 'n' blues and country with “Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music,” Charles also recorded a series of often overlooked instrumental jazz albums.
The most blisteringly soulful of these jazz records, ”Genius+Soul=Jazz,” has just been reissued by Rhino, along with several of Charles' other classic Atlantic and ABC-Paramount albums, in honor of his 50th anniversary as a recording artist.
