Sopranista - definition of Sopranista in Encyclopedia
A sopranista is a male singer who sings music written in the soprano vocal range.
Distinct from a Countertenor, who trains himself to use the whole of the vocal cords to produce a fuller tone, the Sopranista uses less of the thick part of the vocal cords - thereby allowing access to an extremely high range.
There is a large body of music for male soprano written when it was common to use a castrato - a voice type which, to all intents and purposes, no longer exists.

In music, a soprano is a singer with a voice ranging approximately from middle C to the A a thirteenth above middle C (above the treble clef).
Some adult male singers use a special technique without using falsetto in order to sing in this high range, and they are known as sopranistas.

Male soprano & countertenor, Aris Christofellis-Listen here
Aris is a sopranist or 'sopranista', a countertenor who sings in the high soprano.
His speciality is the ornamentation of the operatic music written for the castrati in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
As the first male soprano to be heard in opera in over a hundred years, he is the originator of this voice type in the modern era; but whereas the previous operatic male sopranos were castrati, Aris is a countertenor using an exceptional falsetto.

Watches-Angelo Manzotti - Handel Arias for Castrato
Apparently he can somehow sing with only part of his vocal chords which helps him to imitate a female sound, or something to that effect.
Unfortunately, besides high notes, this disc has little to recommend it.
This leads to a countertenor (excuse me, "sopranista") sound which can extend phenomenally high.

 Castrato
Sopranistas are also able to perform some music which was written for castrati, and composers such as Rossini wrote parts specifically for sopranista.
Some uncastrated male singers are able to use their voices up into the soprano register, apparently without the use of the falsetto voice, and are known as sopranistas.
There have also been reported cases of so-called "natural castrati" who were born with hormonal disorders that reproduce the above "desired" effects of castration without the surgeon's knife.

Angelo Manzotti, the rediscovered Italian sopranista, was quite spectacular at his British debut (concert performance, but in full costume!) but his CD is very patchy (Bongiovanni GB 5566-2).
I have made some comparisons from my collection.
For a bench-mark, I return to the near-veteran James Bowman (still singing superbly) whose experience and innate musicianship tells; try his Handel recital on Hyperion with The King's Consort, an object lesson for his (much) younger contenders [CDA 66797].

The ultimate result of this profound change is that a new set of vocal ranges become available (see bass, baritone, tenor, contralto, sopranista; see also castrato).
While the girl's voice tends to develop gradually into the richness of the adult female voice, the voice of the boy is subject to the effects of the dropping of the larynx.

Countertenor - TheBestLinks.com - Castrato, Opera, Pop music, Rock and roll, ...
The term countertenor is also used much less frequently to mean a normal male tenor who uses some falsetto at the very top of his range.
It is thought that sopranistas also use falsetto, sometimes called 'unsupported falsetto', (there is much speculation over this unusual voice type).
