PCWorld.com - Turn Your PC Into a SongCatcher
Where SongCatcher distinguishes itself, however, is in its capability to split the raw audio into individual songs (eliminating annoying commercials and DJ chatter) and to identify those songs by artist and title.
As a recorder, SongCatcher is not so unlike other PC audio recorders, including the sound recorder program integrated into Windows.
Each song can contain up to a minute of audio leading into the song--the end of the previous song, DJ introductions--and excess audio at the end.

 Songcatcher
Songcatcher is too pat to ever approach the song's complexity, but it is a measure of Greenwald's intelligence that, for the length of the scene, she's willing to give her film up to its mystery.
Writer/director Maggie Greenwald is willing to suspend her narrative for minutes at a time in order to spotlight a song, and these moments - especially a baying, mournful solo turn by Iris Dement - are everything one could hope for.

 Songcatcher The Overview
For Mansfield, the film was a chance to explore the roots of the music he had listened to, loved and played all his life.
The sweet, haunting songs "caught" on film in "SONGCATCHER: represent some of America's most powerful musical influences - the Appalachian roots that later sprouted into the spirited twang of American country music, the lively atmosphere of bluegrass, the urgent relevancy of folk and eventually the Southern-influenced birth of Elvis Presley's rock n'roll.
Greenwald knew right from the start that the film had to be suffused with incredible sounds from all over Appalachia, reflecting the fantastic diversity and influence of the music.

It is these moments when Songcatcher is understandably at its best, as Greenwald takes her sweet time letting the people do what they do.
Almost every song is sung from start to finish, and the quivering, yodel-like strains of this magical sound get their due spotlight.
Noble ideas, sure, and writer-director Maggie Greenwald tries real hard to make her story and characters likeable as she explores the Appalachian folk music in the beginning of the 20th century.

The ballad “Barbara Allen” is sung three times in Songcatcher, and the way it’s performed illustrates writer-director Maggie Greenwald’s take on the place of folk music in America.
But when it comes to music, it’s a blissful love letter to the old-time sounds which have the ability to haunt mountain folk and flatlanders alike.
Unfortunately, there’s a quaintness to the way Greenwald has filmed Songcatcher that keeps it from truly expressing the power of these songs, and how they voice the hardscrabble life eked out on the beautiful but harsh mountainsides.

Songcatcher's story is about a Briish woman, played by Tumbleweed's Janet McTeer, in post Spanish/American war America, transplanted to the New York Appalachians to study and phonograph the origins of English folk ballads, like those that later became "O, Death" (traditonial) and "Single Girl/Married Girl" (The Carter Family).

village voice > film > Songcatcher; Russian Doll; Swordfish by Michael Atkinson
Earnest, anemic, and ham-handed, Maggie Greenwald's new period drama, Songcatcher, occupies interesting territory: Appalachia circa 1907, explored by a woman musicologist in order to record the native folk tunes she recognizes as long-lost Anglo-Celtic ballads unheard anywhere else for a century or more.
Fascinating sociocultural contexts don't automatically translate into narrative, and because recording hillbilly croonings from recalcitrant mountainfolk isn't a story, Greenwald resorts to cheap politics and cliché for her frictions.
The title is predicated on the old Marx Brothers speakeasy-password routine, but the story (superhacker Hugh Jackman is connived into working for megacrook-CIA splinter John Travolta, on what turns out to be a draconian anti-terrorist campaign) is just what fills in the gaps between slow-motion fireballs, Matrix-style frozen mayhem, and Halle Berry's notoriously undraped breasts.

Many writers begin their careers by writing about their own lives and families, but I wrote more than a dozen books before I ventured into family history in the course of a novel.
I found Malcolm McCourry while I was doing the research for an earlier book, and I was so intrigued with him that I made him the focal point of The Songcatcher, mostly because I thought he had such an interesting life, and only incidentally because he was my four-times great-grandfather.
As an adolescent Malcolm turned up in Morristown, New Jersey, where he apprenticed with an attorney, later becoming a lawyer himself.
