Sonata (music) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the classical period and afterwards, sonatas for piano solo were the most common genre of sonata, with sonatas for violin and piano and cello and piano being next.
The "sonata idea", as well as the term "sonata" continued to be central to musical analysis, and a strong influence on composers, both in large scale works and in chamber music.
The sonata da chiesa, generally for one or more violins and bass, consisted normally of a slow introduction, a loosely fugued allegro, a cantabile slow movement and a lively finale in some such binary form as suggests affinity with the dance-tunes of the suite.

 Musical Forms - Sonata
After 1700 the 'solo' sonata, for one melody instrument and bass, became more popular; violin, flute, oboe and cello were the most favoured instruments.
More exceptional were sonatas for unaccompanied solo instruments, such as Biber's and Bach's for violin, Handel's for harpsichord and Bach's for organ.
The break with tradition is evident both in those sonatas by Bartók, Stravinsky, Poulenc and Hindemith which look back to a much earlier age and in the piano sonalas of Barraqué and Boulez, which have no links of form or genre with any previous Sonatas.

 Biber Mystery Sonatas
In the manuscript the 15 Mystery Sonatas are followed by a Passacaglia in G minor for unaccompanied violin.
Charles Burney wrote in 1789 that ‘of all the violin players of the last century Biber seems to have been the best, and his solos are the most difficult and fanciful of any music I have seen of the same period’.
Appropriately, the sonatas representing the rest of the Joyful Mysteries mostly use tunings in sharps that give the violin a bright, open sonority.

 Ludwig Van Beethoven: Piano Sonatas
To pianists, the 32 piano sonatas of Beethoven are a central core of the repertoire and are often referred to as the New Testament of keyboard music - the Old Testament being the 48 preludes and Fugues of Bach's 'Well Tempered Clavier'.
Beethoven was well aware of the difficulties this sonata posed for the pianist and listeners and even went as far as to suggest to Ries that the 4th movement could be left out altogether in order to make the work more accessible for a London audience.
The adagio, one of the profoundest and longest single movements in all piano music is followed by a crowning fugal finale to challenge the technique of even the greatest virtuoso.

Classical Notes - Classical Classics - Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, By Peter Gutmann
Excerpts from the Sonatas and Partitas continued throughout the acoustical era with the next generation of violinists.
The partitas are suites of dances, although the second breaks away to conclude with arguably the greatest piece of music ever conceived for solo strings – a 15 minute chaconne in which a single idea resonates through 31 variations that embrace a universe of artistry and expression.
And of all the great works written for strings, perhaps Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin are the most wondrous – and rather mysterious as well.

There have been complete recordings of the sonatas on the harpsichord (by Scott Ross and Fernando Valenti), but this CD is part of a project on the Naxos label to record the sonatas in their entirety for the piano.
In their gaiety, lyricism, lightness, and eccentricity, the 550-odd keyboard sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) are among the joys of music.
Music-lovers who want to explore Scarlatti's sonatas in detail (and who are comfortable hearing these works on the piano) will enjoy this CD and its companions in the Naxos series.

The Sonatas and interludes is not just a string of pieces, it is a passage in Cage's life.
Peggy Glanville-Hicks never mentions the Sonatas and interludes in the profile of John Cage that she wrote for the September 1948 issue of Musical America.
In the Concert or the Song books the plan was a chance-derived set of tasks: "compose a bit of music using a variant of this particular compositional technique," it might tell him.

INKPOT#76 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: YSAYE Sonatas for Solo Violin. Marinkovic (Collins)
Ysaÿe's Sonatas are certainly not as approachable as Bach's and can be as hard for the listener as well as to the performer.
It is quite a shame, for these Sonatas present an ultimate challenge to the performer, formidable in the score and also challenging to the artistry of the musician.
A bad performance of these Sonatas can sound very unpleasant or vulgar, with all the trademark piercing notes and crashing chords of the modern violin music stereotype.

Journal of Seventeenth-Century Music Vol. 5 No. 1 Review
Lindgren acknowledges two possibilities in addition to the violoncello: one is a five-stringed variant of the cello, tuned C, G, d, a, e'; the other is the tenor violin, an instrument with dimensions somewhere between those of the viola and violoncello and tuned an octave below the violin (G, d, a, e').
(note 3) Otherwise, cello pieces appeared in print one or two at a time as additions to collections of violin sonatas, violin and cello duets, or trio sonatas.
His violin solos in manuscript, by contrast, exceed first position by up to an octave and contain pseudo-fugal expositions, which are effected by intricate double stopping.
