Smile (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smile's cut-up structure was certainly unique for its time in mainstream popular music, and it indicates that Brian was familiar with the techniques of musique concrète and the use of chance operations in making art—an approach which, according to musicologist Ian MacDonald, was also exerting a strong influence on The Beatles at this time.
Through the first half of 1967 the album's release date was repeatedly postponed as Wilson tinkered with the recordings, experimenting with different takes and sounds, unable or unwilling to supply a completed version of the album.
Crucial to the inception of Smile was Wilson's collaboration with singer, musician, composer and lyricist Van Dyke Parks, whom Wilson invited to write lyrics for the new album in spring 1966; at that time the project was still provisionally titled Dumb Angel.

Another fact of the album was it was going to be the first concept album with songs running from one to the other.
This album is a very good album however it was a simply version of some of the same songs and other songs but it went back to the basics like the Beatles would do later with The White Album.
The album was not totally accepted by the American public but was accepted by overseas fans in England where the Beatles attended a Pet Sounds listening party upon the release of the album.

Smile: The Definitive Lost Album - Article - Stylus Magazine
Smile was born from several projects Brian was considering at the time: an album of comedy, a fitness album, a record featuring only water sounds.
Additionally, Capitol’s reissues of these albums as twofers with two albums on one CD have also included a number of bonus tracks, many of which date from the late 1966-early 1967 era.
Although Brian Wilson didn’t consider the short a cappella group chant “Prayer” a proper album track (and hence didn’t include it on his tracklist memo), it’s clear from the recording sessions for the song that he did intend for “Prayer” to be included on the Smile album.

Smiley Smile was an album released by The Beach Boys on Brother Records in 1967.
Although the album was a relative failure, barely scraping into the Top 50, the song "Good Vibrations was a #1 hit for the band (their last of the 1960s).

The Smile that the Festival Hall heard could never have been the Smile of 1966, and to fans the point is that, until now, they have been free to imagine their own version, a record of unparalleled and numinous beauty that would have changed musical history.
Most of the album's songs had been recorded by the time Wilson abandoned the project.
Smile, by the Beach Boys, has passed into legend since it was abandoned, half-finished, in 1967 amid drug-fuelled paranoia, inter-band strife and intense competition with the Beatles for the throne of popular music.

Smiley Smile IS SMiLE - Rock 'N Roll Case Study
Smile might not have been a “concept album”, but when considering the amount of “laughter” that occur in several songs on Smiley Smile, it is tempting to call IT a "concept album".
There have been speculations on whether Smile was to be a “concept album” or not, Domenic Priore even suggesting the theory of the Smile album as something of a continuous song cycle with “link tracks” between songs, a theory that has since been heavily criticized.
It was all a process, “Smile” is not an album, but a songwriter’s mindmap, the way TO the album called Smiley Smile (and some additional tracks), with the back side that many, or most, people disapproving on what eventually was being released.

Holy Pop Relic - Why Brian Wilson should leave the unfinished Beach Boy masterpiece Smile alone. By Jeff Turrentine
Smile, as it exists now in a half-realized state, is really the first interactive rock 'n' roll artwork, graciously allowing the listener to finish the songs, to order them according to personal taste, and to invent an overarching concept that might have unified and made sense of Parks' cavalcade of trippy images.
But perhaps the best case for allowing the album to remain unfinished is this: Smile, had it ever been released, would have been a watershed musical moment not only because it was so new, but because the Beach Boys, of all bands, were putting it out.
Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 on the heels of the critically lauded album Pet Sounds and the follow-up smash single "Good Vibrations," Smile was being billed as a significant turning point in popular music well before the public had heard a single note of it.

However, even if lyrically both songs don't belong to their respective albums and were recorded well before the sessions for them, musically and production wise they fit in very well.
Both songs had to be included in the albums by Capitol's will, in fact they were the current hit singles.
The irony of the lyric and the place of the song within the albums in some way confirms the theory of many who think that's an appropiate closing welcoming the listener to a round cycle of the album and starting again with Prayer.

Had it been completed in 1966 as planned, "Smile," the Beach Boys' legendary unreleased album, would have begun with a song called "Prayer": a minute and a half of wordlessly angelic brotherly harmony, pure and rising.

For the first time ever, the program for SMiLE was compiled, after Brian Wilson first listened to the original recordings with his musical midwife, Darian Sahanaja of the Wondermints (which has long functioned as Wilson's live backing band), and then worked them into a live show and album recording.
Happily, a new recording of SMiLE by Brian Wilson reveals the record as nothing more (or less) than a jaunty epic of psychedelic Americana, a rambling and discursive, playful and affectionate series of song cycles.
In truth, SMiLE should have been released and forgotten, reissued and reappraised, and finally remastered for the digital era and ushered into the rock canon ever since Brian Wilson halted work on it in May 1967 (after an exhausting 85 recording sessions).
